Choose from the sentences A-H the one which best fits each gap (1-6). There is one extra sentence which you do not need to use. There is an example at the beginning (0). A Whatever was missing, we had packed in our suitcase. B It could be a Mediterranean climate one minute and an Alpine chill the next. C Surely there is nowhere in the world that's both hot and cold? D In the future, it may well take the place of tropical islands and ski resorts. E This is what virtual reality is all about - making you believe that you are actually there. F What is more, there's no danger of getting an upset stomach because of the local cuisine. G lt always causes huge family arguments that last for days. H The landmarks, buildings and scenery we saw were so realistic. IS IT REAL OR VIRTUAL? Whenever the topic of holidays comes up in our house we can never agree on what to do or where to go. Mum and Dad usually want to go on a winter holiday and enjoy skiing in the Alps whereas | prefer relaxing in the sun by a tropical sea. We never seem to want the same thing and in the end nobody completely enjoys the break. This year we found a solution to please everybody ~ a combined winter and summer holiday! How did we manage that? [Vy] Well, the only way to experience snow-covered mountains and golden sands at the same time is to take a holiday in the realms of virtual reality. Using the latest technology and vast amounts of information collected about thousands of different holiday resorts, this new computerised travel system is extremely convincing. You can go anywhere and see anything you want. You really can’t tell the difference from the real thing. The Great Lakes of Canada, the Great Barrier Reef and the Taj Mahal were just like I've seen on travel documentaries. | was able to sunbathe on a beautiful white sandy beach and swim in a tropical blue sea. | could feel a warm gentle breeze against my skin and smell the salt in the air. Meanwhile, my parents were skiing down the long ski slopes with real snow and deep green trees sparkling with ice. It all sounds wonderful doesn’t it? We just had to put on gloves, goggles and headgear and sit back relax and enjoy the trip. However, neither the slopes nor the sea us were real. The clouds and the blue sky are painted scenery and the sea is a huge swimming pool with an enormous wave machine. The sun tan comes from the sun lamps in the roof. Nevertheless, it feels so real it is hard to tell the difference. | actually had to keep reminding myself that | was only about half an hour's drive away from my house. For those of you who believe that it is all too fake and artificial and couldn't possibly compare to the real thing, just stop and think about it for a moment. No more delays or lost luggage at the airport and no more crowded beaches. Your holiday will never again be spoiled by bad weather and you won't break your leg going down the slopes either. In fact, everything is perfect. However, that is not all a virtual reality holiday has to offer. If you get bored with a place or have had enough of swimming in the sea, just a quick click of a button and the season has changed.[5|_|Alternatively, you could simply change the sea from a gentle ocean to a surfer's paradise. The choices are endless and they are all yours. =: We enjoyed a wonderful few days holiday. Nobody got annoyed, fed up, sunburnt or bitten by mosquitoes, in fact we all felt extremely relaxed and completely satisfied. | think that this type of holiday will become more and more popular as technology progresses. | can’t wait until next year when once again we will travel around the world of virtual reality. Once you've chosen your destination there are still many other decisions to be made. There are so many different kinds of holidays on offer nowadays, a little advice can make all the difference when it comes to getting exactly what you want. pf id Imagine a holiday where you wouldn't have to decide where to stay, where to eat and what to do each day. You wouldn't have to worry about expenses either: everything you are likely to need has already been paid for! If this sounds like heaven to you, why not consider an all-inclusive holiday deal? As the name suggests, everything is included: accommodation, drinks, meals and, in some cases, daily excursions, water sports and other activities. The trick is to always ask your travel agent exactly what you can expect for your money. Then, lie back and relax! Now you can look for, and book, a bargain holiday from the comfort of your own home, thanks to computers. Many travel companies have their own websites and some specialise in cheap flights so you can easily book flights and holiday packages online. If you don’t have a computer, you can still find bargain holidays through Teletext which you can book by phone. If your TV search is unsuccesstul, try checking the travel sections of weekend newspapers. Bf Holidays with young children can be very stressful! luckily, many major holiday companies now cater specifically for families with young children. Backpacking is especially popular with students and young people who want a long, inexpensive holiday - often in exotic or unusual places. But be warned; if you enjoy comfort and luxury, this probably isn't the holiday for you. Backpacking can be exciting and challenging, but also very tiring. Plan your routes and destinations well in advance and surf the net for websites which have information and advice for independent travellers, or find a detailed guide book which will tell you everything you need to know. To get the most from a touring holiday, we recommend you buy a good guide book, one that contains detailed maps and updated information about costs, transport, accommodation, restaurants and sites worth visiting. You can read about the history and culture of the place you are visiting and even learn a few useful phrases in another language. You can also find a lot of useful information on the Internet and simply print the pages / you need. | Finally, what if your holiday goes horribly wrong? If you have bocked with a travel company and have a serious complaint you can usually claim some kind of compensation. Complain to a representative at the resort and write to the company’s customer service centre when you get home. If you are refused compensation, contact the Association of British Travel Agents {ABTA}. Chinese medicine has been around for at least 5,000 years. However, it has only recently become an increasingly popular alternative to conventional medicine in Western Europe. The two philosophies of Chinese and Western medicine are very different. Chinese medicine is holistic, which means that the healer treats the entire body to cure the cause of the illness, not just the symptoms. Western medicine, on the other hand, only treats the part of the body that has the problem. Another difference is that Chinese medicines contain natural products. They often consist of extracts trom plants, animals or minerals. A typical remedy can include up to twelve different herbs. Each herb has a different quality and remedies usually contain a combination of herbs whose qualities are correctly balanced to cure the patient. The Chinese believe that the body's natural energy, or ‘chi’, flows through channels, that are connected to all bodily functions and organs. These channels are called meridians. The energy, in a healthy person, flows freely through all meridians. The Chinese believe we get ill because a meridian has become blocked. Practitioners of Chinese medicine make a diagnosis by looking at a person's skin tone, tongue and general appearance. They also listen to their breathing and era mE natn PE gee nt i nna ae es 1 Chinese medicine in Europe is A an ancient tradition. B growing in popularity. C the only alternative to Western medicine. D treats the cause as well as the symptoms. 3 Chinese remedies A only use ingredients of the best quality. B contain ingredients that have ditferent qualities. C help restore a patient's sense of balance. D are more effective than conventional remedies. LOOKING TO THE EAST CLICK ON 4 consider six different aspects of the patient's pulse, as opposed to the one aspect corresponding to the heart rate as recognised in Western medicine. They also take into consideration the spiritual and mental health of the patient. They believe that a person's chi can be imbalanced for months before any symptoms of illness appear. Perhaps the bestknown form of Chinese medicine is acupuncture. Although, because it involves needles, it isn’t popular with everyone. Fine needles are inserted into areas of the body that the Chinese call acupuncture points. The needles unblock the meridians and allow energy to flow freely through the body again. Acupuncture is used fo treat a wide variety of ailments, but it is more commonly used as a form of pain relief. More and more, Western doctors are recognising that Chinese medicine may be able to cure illnesses that conventional medicine cannot. Evidence suggests that a long list of ailments including skin problems, arthritis, asthma and digestive disorders, for example, are being successfully treated every day. Many patients who have not been cured by conventional medicine have been helped by Chinese treatments. As Western techniques such as X-rays have been adopted in China, so it is that traditional Chinese medicine is gradually being accepted by the Western medical profession. 4 'Chi’ is the Chinese name for A channels. B meridians. C bodily functions and organs. D the body's natural energy. 5 Acupuncture is used to A locate channels of energy in the body. B correct the flow of energy in the body. C reduce the energy levels in the body. D block the meridians. 6 At present, Western doctors A don't believe in Chinese medicine. B use Chinese medicine on a regular basis. He was a man, who ~ spent practically his whole life underwater investigating the hidden depths of the ocean and who did more to educate the world about the mysteries of the deep than any other person before or since. He was born in June, 1910 in a small town in France. He was a sickly child and spent much of his time in bed, reading and dreaming about a life at sea. In 1920, Jacques’ family moved to America and he was encouraged to start swimming to build up his strength. This was the start of his fascination with water and the more he learned through his own experiences, the more passionate he became about ‘looking through nature's keyhole’. However, his career in underwater exploration came about by accident. After joining the French Navy and travelling around the world, he was involved in a serious car accident that left him badly injured with two broken arms. He started _swimming in the Mediterranean sea to strengthen his weak arms as part of his recovery process and — rediscovered his love of the ocean. He developed a pair of underwater goggles and experimented with underwater breathing equipment to allow him to stay underwater for longer periods. His experiments led to the development of the Aqua-Lung which was a commercial success. He helped to dispose of German mines and was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Legion D'Honneur medals for his bravery. In 1942, he made his first underwater film Sixty Feet Down. It was eighteen minutes long and was entered in the Cannes Film Festival. After the war, he bought a ship which he named the Calypso and continued to make films. He wrote a book called The Silent World which became a best seller and was the subject of his next film. It received the Palme d’Or at Cannes and won an Academy Award. His film successes led to his own television series produced by ABC called The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. This series of weekly shows ran for eight years and was immensely popular around the globe. jacques Cousteau became a household name. He promoted the conservation of the oceans and highlighted the problems of overfishing, pollution and the destruction of the coral reefs. He established the Cousteau Society in 1974 to protect ocean life and discovered new species, raised sunken ships and even led an expedition to Antarctica. Jacques Cousteau will be remembered as one of the great men of the twentieth century. His documentaries, discoveries and inventions won him many awards including the National Geographic Society's Gold Medal and Centennial Award and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was truly an extraordinary man whose love of the sea, determination and passion are an example to us all. i i Test 2B CLICK ON 4 Listening H You will hear five people talking about headaches. A In 1982 their campaign to protect whales led to the International Whaling Commission agreeing to ban whale hunting. B In the 1960s, John Bolen, Paul Cote and Irving Stowe decided that it was time for action and they began working on an idea to help protect the environment using non-violent means. C Because their aim was to make the world aware of what was happening to the planet, they made publicity their weapon. D Because of the negative publicity, Shell did not dump the platform. E Greenpeace would appreciate your help. F In ten years it had become so popular that some of the original members felt that the organisation had become more important than its causes. G The question is; what are we doing about it? WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE We all know that our natural resources are being depleted, animals are becoming extinct and our environment is so polluted that it’s a wonder we have survived at all. 10 |G | The answer, unfortunately, is: not enough. However, thanks to the efforts of three people in Canada, there is hope. [iy | The idea caught on quickly and the name Greenpeace was chosen because it accurately described their goal — to save the planet without hurting anyone. There were other similar groups formed at around the same time, but what made Greenpeace so much more effective was its unusual method of protest. Their ‘common man’ approach caught the attention of the media and they showed startling images that very few of us can ignore. Their first successful campaign took place in 1971 when three Greenpeace volunteers and four journalists left Vancouver, Canada, in a small boat called the Phyllis Cormack. Their mission was to stop the US government from testing H bombs on Amchitka iskand in Alaska. They were all arrested, but thanks to all the negative publicity, the US government decided to stop using Amchitka island as a testing site. In 1972, Greenpeace tried to stop France from testing nuclear weapons in French Polynesia. The French boarded their boat by force. A crew member managed to take a photograph of the incident and once again the world was able fo see what was going on. There was so much media attention surrounding this incident that, in 1975, France temporarily stopped its nuclear testing in that area. At the end of the 70s, Greenpeace Foundation became Greenpeace International. However, even they could not deny that they had raised the world’s awareness of environmental issues. Thanks to Greenpeace, subjects like deforestation, toxic waste, water contamination and animal rights were being discussed by ordinary people, not just concerned environmentalists. During the 1980s, Greenpeace became so powertul that it implemented major changes in international laws and policies[4 | _]In 1983, they publicly exposed the dumping of radioactive waste into the sea and, as a result, this was also banned. By the 1990s, Greenpeace had become so influential that it was responsible for the worldwide ban on using large driftnets at sea which were trapping dolphins and, thanks to their campaigns, a 50 year ban on mineral exploitation in Antarctica was officially declared. Of course, Greenpeace has made mistakes. For example, when Shell Oil attempted to dump an old oil platform in the Atlantic Ocean, Greenpeace declared that the platform was full of toxic waste and would pollute the surrounding area. However, it was later discovered that the platform actually contained very little toxic waste and could have been dumped causing little environmental damage. Greenpeace made a public apology to Shell, but the public began to question whether other claims might have been exaggerated. Nevertheless, despite a few minor mistakes, Greenpeace has done so much good work that it is hard to criticise them. They have also given everyone the opportunity to take an active role in trying to save our planet. Let's just hope that we are not too late! Soon, there may be one card that does everything. Manufacturers are aiming to produce a chip that is small enough to go on a card but still able to hold a huge amount of data. If they succeed, we may well see the introduction of ‘multi-application’ cards that can be used as your passport, driving licence and your credit card. However, many people worry about their security. Signatures and PIN numbers would not be sufficient to stop fraud. One suggestion is to incorporate fingerprint identification on the card. Of course, this would mean that even more information would need to be imprinted on the microchip, so perhaps it is not yet time to throw away that purse full of plastic. B Online living Would it be possible to live completely online? 23-yearold graduate Chris tried it out as a volunteer for a research project. In 13 weeks he had to set up a home and attend to his daily needs, including banking, studying, eating and entertaining himself. The only people he had for company were on the Internet. His daily routine consisted of checking emails, doing research and spending hours on the net shopping for what he needed. With no pizza place or local shop to go to Chris had to plan all his meals in advance to avoid being hungry. The house wasn't cleaned for weeks [it took some time to find a vaccum cleaner over the net). However, he did manage to furnish the house. Surprisingly, though, it was extremely difficult to buy a pair of shoes. This experiment revealed that successful online living relies a great deal on being practical and it definitely has its advantages although it may not be as instantly satisfying as living in the real world. fee ag a eee ange Which passage(s} mention|s) something which: has been used for almost half a century? cannot be copied by criminals? doesn’t encourage contact with people? may take longer than expected? cannot be relied on completely? improves public safety? requires good organisational skills? con be used at home? makes people think about their behaviour? involves using biological information? able t to © put < a foot wron CEC from the passages (A- D). A WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY C Iris Scanning This form of identification was introduced in 1995 and works by checking the patterns in your eye. Some banks in America have already installed scanners in ATMs and their customers no longer need to use a PIN number or even a cash card. Iris scanning is also already replacing passwords on desktop computers, preventing unauthorised people from accessing the computer. At home, this would mean that children would not be able to browse unsuitable websites or get into their parents’ private files. On a larger scale, airports could use iris scanning to help prevent people from using false passports. However, unlike fingerprints, iris scans can be taken without your knowledge. You will only have to glance in the direction of a camera and your details will be recorded. This has advantages for detecting criminals, but disadvantages for the ordinary law-abiding citizen. Looking deep into someone's eyes may take on a new meaning in the future! D Surveillance Cameras Surveillance cameras have been in existence since the 1960s and today they can watch our every move, in shops, at train stations, in the street, or at football stadiums. In areas with closed circuit cameras, the police can spot criminals and even prevent a crime from happening. The police can film a crowd of people at a football match, for example, and using a computer that can scan faces at the rate of 250 per second, they can identity known troublemakers. In some areas where cameras exist, the crime rate has dropped by 50%. Other applications of CCTV include installing them in private homes to allow anxious mothers to see if their children are being mistreated with the help of small hidden cameras. There are plenty of eyes in the sky, too. Powerful satellites can identity people and places from space. If you don’t have the online address, all you have to do is use a search engine. Most search engines and Internet shopping directories should be able to find it for you. Firstly, it is convenient for those people who don’t own cars, are housebound or just too busy to go shopping. In addition, goods are usually cheaper on the web because online shops want to attract and keep customers and their costs are lower. The cost of using the net is getting cheaper, but many Internet providers still charge by the minute, so browsing around a wide range of shops can take as long as a traditional shopping visit. For questions 1-6, choose the correct answer A, B, C or D. ~ What do we know about honey? it's sweet and sticky, if "fastes great on bread and in hot drinks, and it's a pleasant alternative to sugar. However, there’s a lot more to honey than meets the eye and one day it may replace many of the items in our medicine cabinet. Doctors throughout history have appreciated the medicinal properties of honey. In Ancient Egypt it was used to treat cuts and burns. The Ancient Romans used it to help people with sleeping disorders and the Ancient Greeks used it to cure skin diseases, ulcers and sores. More recently, German doctors mixed it with cod liver oil to treat battle wounds during WWI, and opera singers have been known to use it to boost their energy and soothe their throats. — Today, as homeopathic medicine is becoming more popular, honey has been rediscovered as a natural remedy and is being used successfully to treat many ailments such as anaemia, arthritis, colds and stomach ulcers. It is particularly effective in the treatment of burns and wounds. Honey aerosol sprays have even been used to treat chronic bronchitis. The beauty industry has also recognised the natural benefits of honey and there are many cosmetic companies which use honey based products. These include creams, lotions, soaps and face masks which claim to help heal blemishes, reduce the appearance of scars, moisturise the skin, soften wrinkles and make skin look younger and healthier. There are also a number of honey based hair care products which claim to 1 Honey was used to treat battle wounds by A The Ancient Romans. B The Ancient Greeks. C German doctors. Honey - Food or Medicine? _.strengthen hair and make it softer, shinier and healthier. Honey and products containing honey, have always been popular items in health food shops. It is sold in various forms as a remedy for sore throats, stomach ulcers and as a gentle, natural laxative. What is it then that makes honey such an effective natural remedy? Well, after many years of research, biochemists still can’t say for certain. They have, however, managed to identify some of the healing properties in honey. Firstly, honey contains low levels of hydrogen peroxide, a chemical which kills bacteria. Secondly, it creates a moist environment when spread onto a wound which speeds up the natural healing process. Scientists have also found that certain types of honey act as antibiotics. In fact, honey is actually more effective than some of our current antibiotics because it works on certain microbes and bacteria that have developed a resistance to current antibiotic treatment. However, ~researchers have also found some types of honey are more beneficial than others. For example, honey containing nectar from the Australian Jelly bush and the New Zecland Tea Tree plant have been found to possess more medicinal properties than ony other varieties. Medical researchers are still working on identifying the 5 role that honey could play in traditional medical practice, but they all agree that we should not be using the honey in our kitchen cupboards to treat ourselves. This is because many commercial brands actually / contain bacteria which could contaminate an open wound. They also agree, unfortunately, that simply eating honey has minimal health benefits. 3 Honey based beauty products A remove scars. B act as natural laxatives. C are used as cosmetics. The Future of Sport © Technology, which plays an important role in all our lives, _ has now entered the world of sport. Athletes can now use a ~ wide range of modern equipment which will improve their performance on the track, in the pool, or on the field. A Super Swimsuit Competitors in swimming events can now break their personal speed records by wearing an Adidas Supersuit. This special swimsuit covers the whole body except for the head and lower arms and fegs. It fits tightly round the upper arms and legs in order to help reduce muscle vibration and save energy, so that swimmers do not get so tired. The suit has been coated with Teflon, a kind of plastic which gives ita smooth surface, allowing a swimmer to glide through the water faster. B Power Punchbag Boxers can now improve their punches by training with a special type of punchbag which contains an electrical device called an accelerometer. This translates the force of every punch into diagrams which are then displayed on a computer screen. Boxers can view a video of themselves ~ training and the numbers and graphics allow them and their coaches to study and improve aspects of the boxer's position and arm movements. Boxers using the accelerometer have already become stronger and better at their chosen sport. C Aerodynamic Arrows ~ Archers often find that strong winds upset their performance as the force of the moving air tends to blow their arrows off course. The arrows have to travel a distance of 70 metres at a speed of more than 200 kilometres an hour and can & easily be affected by the wind. This problem has now been Which piece(s) of equipment: Lit] [2{_| prevents fatigue? checks the athlete's position? assess the athlete’s performance? are designed to reduce wind resistance? solved thanks to a new type of arrow manufactured by Eastern Archery of Salt take City, Utah. These arrows, which are only Smm in diameter, have a special coating and heavy metal points which provide them with extra weight at the front. This helps them fly straight and fast, even in strong winds. D Brilliant Bikes In 1996, GT Bikes introduced their new Superbike to the world of cycle racing. It was made of extremely lightweight materials and had tiny front wheels. Its handlebars were set so far forward that cyclists were forced into a crouching position which enabled them to cut down on wind resistance times by several seconds. However, few Olympic teams could afford them and they were banned from competitions. But the Superbike has made a comeback. Superbike Ill, with a diamond shaped frame, equal-sized wheels and more upright handlebars, is more aerodynamic than other models and was used by several Olympians in the 2000 Olympics. On these bikes, and wearing special bodysuits, cyclists can cut times by as much as one to three seconds. E Rower Regulator When coaching a team of eight rowers, it can be difficult to tell which of the rowers’ technique or timing needs to be corrected. To solve this problem, scientists attached sensors to the rowers’ oars to find out how much effort each rower was putting into their stroke. The sensorcollected data is transmitted through a small antenna to a special laptop on the coach's boat. Players are being bought and sold for enormous sums of money otherwise known as transfer fees. Players come from and go to overseas clubs, attracted by higher salaries and their share of the transfer fee. Directors will sell any player but only for the right price. The more well-known and talented a player is, the more expensive the price tag is likely to be. There is no club loyalty anymore and serving a full contract or even a season is becoming increasingly rare. People like me used to play for the love of the game, but now | feel it is the love of money which is more important. B John Perry, amateur tennis player There has been much reaction to the fact that some lower ranked tennis players earn more from their sponsorship deals than they do playing on the court. It seems unimportant that players who earn a high income from deals with leading companies have never actually won a tournament. The names of such players appear more on front page headlines than on the sports pages. Even top ranking players at the height of their careers don't get as much attention from the media as those below them. It’s all about being seen in the newspapers and on television wearing a smile and the right ~ logo. Skill and athletic ability are not essential anymore to be a success on the tennis circuit. This is not the case anymore, and sports stars nowadays also appear in adverts for footwear and shampoo. What is worst of all, though, is that sport celebrities appear in adverts that suggest that we should eat snacks or drink fizzy drinks. It doesn't seem to matter whether these products are healthy or unhealthy for young people! To me, it's not right that sports celebrities suggest that we buy or consume products that are not good for us. Perhaps sports stars do not follow such a healthy diet as we believe. D Jack Murray, sports commentator lt is certain that snooker players have to spend hours and hours practising in order to be good enough to take part in competitions. There is no guarantee of success and any injury to either hand or arm could mean the end of a career. What is hard to believe though, is the amount of prize money that is offered for winning a major snooker competition. A good player can easily earn £500,000 a year. There is no need to win a trophy to earn money either, thanks to the media. The player that makes the highest break (the score made from one turn in a snooker game} while the games are being recorded, gets a prize of up to £20,000, but if the break is not televised, the amount drops to around £2,500. It’s not just winning that counts, it's what players do in front of a TV camera. PEELE LC TH Marks: —— 12x14 iS 4 : } H You will hear an interview with a street performer. There is an example at the beginning (0). FUNCTIONAL FOODS A Amiiru The Japanese were the first to introduce functional foods. In fact, a sterilized drink called Calpis has been on the market in Japan for over eighty years. Calpis contains lactic acid and yeast. In 1997, an updated version of Calpis was introduced on the market. This new drink is called Amiiru and it is thought that it can prevent cancer, lower blood pressure and reduce tiredness after exercise. Although the manufacturers of Amiiru cannot prove that these claims are true, the drink is hugely successful, and makes an amazing $40 million per year. B TenSecond Breakfasts People who are so busy that they have no time for breakfast will be pleased to learn that there is now a range of functional foods available which will make their lives easier. A range of products known as ‘10-second breakfasts’ can now be found on supermarket shelves. Jelly drinks, sold in soft pouches or tubes, allow people to eat on the run - literally ~ and still get all the nutrients they need for a healthy lifestyle. The handy, squeezable containers allow joggers to eat the protein as soon as they finish exercising, which is the best time for building muscles. C_ Red Bull Red Bull Energy Drink is hugely popular ail over the world. This sweet drink with a strangely medicinal flavour is believed to speed up the body's metabolism, increase athletic performance and make people feel awake and lert. It contains the magical ingredient, Guarana. Guarana Byfleet meres ena Oe ee oe . . It is thought to prevent fatigue, diarrhoea, constipation and headaches. It is also said to help people fight stress and live longer. However, it contains very high levels of caffeine, so it is not suitable for children. D Benecal and Take Control We all know that margarine is better for us than butter, but now margarine is healthier than ever before. Two new margarines, Benecal and Take Control, actually lower cholesterol and help maintain a healthy heart. The reason for this is that they contain sterol and stanol esters (substances taken from plants), which prevent cholesterol from being absorbed into the body. These two ingredients have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels by an impressive 10% and can reduce the risk of a heart attack by up to a third. E Yakult More than 25 million people in 23 different countries have discovered the benefits of Yakult. This fermented milk drink contains beneficial bacteria which can help the digestive system. These micro-organisms help the beneficial bacteria and fight the harmful bacteria in the stomach, and encourage other strains of friendly bacteria to grow. Although you will find Yakult in the dairy section of all leading British supermarkets, next to the milk or yoghurt, it is not thick or creamy and actually tastes more like a refreshing fruit drink. tbat, geal et ea pica Nadia ee SERRE EAS Iola ne at dn cig ibn aaa ish a ial RAT ata Taga in oad a [6] | (71 | [8{_|[9] | Marks: 73 10x] contains micro-organisms? has been re-invented? contain plant extracts? keeps you awake? Every minute of the day, a forest the size of a football pitch disappears, leaving fewer trees to supply us with oxygen. What can we do to help reduce deforestation? Test Booklet - Key a One way that we could help to preserve our forests is to reduce the amount of paper that we use. If people recycled paper more offen, fewer trees would need to be cut down. Schools in the area could collect paper and cardboard packaging from households and take it to recycling bins. Another way would be to set up a campaign to stop people clearing forests and killing wildlife. If more people got actively involved in wildlife protection schemes, the government might take action and protect forest areas so that companies would not be able to build there or clear areas for farming or roads. All in all, there are many ways in which we could do more to prevent deforestation taking place. Isn't it time we all started to care more about the world around us? Although developing a sense of competition has some benefits, | believe that it is wrong to teach children to play sports simply in order to win. First of all, encouraging children to be competitive in sports can lead to a sense of insecurity in less athletic children. They feel left out if they are the last to be picked for a team and are often teased by other children for their lack of athletic ability. In addition, competitive sports can encourage children to. behave roughly. If they are taught that winning is important, they will concentrate.on winning, and may treat their classmates aggressively. On the other hand, some people believe that competitive sports are not only a great way to exercise, but they can also help children to develop skills such as concentration, commitment and co-operation, which will benefit children in later life. In conclusion, | strongly believe that schools should not focus on competition in sports, but should encourage children to develop useful skills through practising individual sports. Children should play sports for fitness and fun and not for trophies. Cover Appeal The front page of the magazine is not always appealing to teenagers. In order to attract more readers, the cover should be brightly coloured with a picture of a popular sport or film star. There should also be eye-catching headlines showing the kinds of articles inside the magazine. Features and Articles We should include more teenageroriented articles. Topics such as schoolwork, personal _ relationships, friendship, fashion and entertainment strongly appeal to teenagers. We could also include an advice page in which teenagers can read about problems people their own age face. Contributors Teenagers enjoy reading about the experiences of people their own age. For this reason, we should publish articles contributed by teenagers, such as reports from students on topical issues, or personal experiences. Conclusion To sum up, a brighter front page, more interesting articles and teenage contributors would certainly attract more teenagers to the magazine. 04 Click On 4 1 C¢ 5 D 9 C 13 B 7 C 2 8B 6 B 1OC 14 D 18 B 3. It was so loud that Spencer crawled to the door to see what was happening, but there were only the shadows of trees in the darkness of the mountain. Then we saw a bright light in the distance. Although it was creepy, we raced down the ladder to investigate. Just as we reached the forest fence, there was an enormous bang and sparks flew into the sky. Thomas ran to the phone box on the corner and called the firefighters. By this time, the sky was alight with roaring flames. "Let's get some water", | shouted. We woke up the neighbours and passed buckets in relay to try and stop the tire from spreading. All of a sudden, the fire engine arrived, and soon firemen were fighting the blaze. It took hours to put it out. Afterwards a fire officer came to speak to us. "Although it was very dangerous to go near the flames, your quick action saved our forest". We became known in the town as ‘The tree house heroes’. Click On 4 Test 1A/1B Listening Decorators Decisions... Male: | only go one way now with my decorating. I'm totally into being environmentally friendly. Recycled and nontoxic are the key words that guide me when | do a house. Most people aren't aware that even furniture finishes can emit harmful chemicals. It depends on things like the glues and paints used. For my ideal house, I'd go for recycled wood, and earthy tones. Female: Moving with the times is important to me. | like clean, modern lines. | want to keep it light and simple, yet functional. | don’t want curtains or fussy fabrics and carpets. Just basic black and grey, and a splash of perhaps red for a cushion, or for an abstract piece of art on the wall. My designs are about being current. Female: Oh yes! The bolder the better. | see colours, lots of them! The house would ideally be desperately crying out for a ‘lif’. I'd start with a medium yellow tone, and add purple and green. I'd be daring but always professional and responsible of course, and do one wall in orange and another in hot pink. The finish would be spectacular! Male: The house would work well with a Japanese influence. A few small, treelike plants in glossy, ceramic pots to start with. I'd then add furniture in bamboo and cane. This would look good particularly for a screen and low coffee table. The fabrics would be in simple white and beige, with a black Japanese letter logo on things like cushions. Female: |'m a traditional girl at heart. My ideal house would be an old one that | could take back to its original period design, as that's exactly my style! I'd put back the fireplace, and add bookshelves on either side. The furniture would be in dark wood, and |’d want heavy pieces in leather or using a tapestry type fabric, similar to what they had in the old days. Test 2A/2B Listening Female: Whenever | work on the computer for more than five hours | get a splitting headache afterwards. What works for me is the old-fashioned cure. | pop one in my mouth and swallow it down with a glass of water and within 15 minutes I'm ready to get back to work. After all, you know what they say, "An aspirin a day keeps the doctor away!" Male: |'ve tried everything, you know, like acupuncture and homeopathic remedies but nothing worked. That is until a friend told me about aromatherapy. It's so simple. All you do is put a few drops of oil into some water, soak a cloth in it and then apply it to your brow and presto! Your headache's gone. Male: Well, I've suffered for years and have gone through terrible agony. Once | almost even missed my own wedding because of the pain. But then | started going to an acupuncturist. At first nothing happened, in fact the headaches seemed to be getting worse. But the acupuncturist explained that this was normal. And he was right because now | rarely get headaches. Test Booklet - Tapescripts Female: |’'m a 2nd grade teacher so you can imagine at the end of a weekday my head feels like it's going to explode. So, when | get home | put a few leaves of dried feverfew in a teapot, add some water and wait for it to brew. Then | sip it and after a few minutes | feel like a new woman. Make: | don’t get them very offen but when | do they'te bad. | mean really bad! | can hardly move and have to lie down until the pain passes. Then | read a magazine article about the benefits of homeopathic medicine. | made an appointment with my local GP and he referred me to a homeopath. After she had finished asking me about a million questions she prescribed some pills for me to take. And you know what? Those little pills that | put under my tongue work wonders. Test 3A/3B Listening Interviewer: So Luciano, with the recycling art exhibition coming up can you tell us what made you take up this unusual art form’? luciano: Well, | wanted to encourage people to think about recycling and to realise how important resources are. Interviewer: So is that the main message of the exhibition? luciano: The key focus of the exhibition is aimed at raising environmental awareness through various art forms, but a lot of artists agree that the idea of educating people on how resources can be used is more important that gaining their admiration for what we produce. . Interviewer: What do you mean? luciano: Well, take any object that you might find in the street that somebody has thrown away and try to think of what you can do with it... | Interviewer: Err umm ... that's a difficult one luciano: Exactly! You are just not used to thinking about how objects can be used. This form of art can help people to explore their imagination and to think and discover how objects can be transformed. Interviewer: Where do you find your materials? luciano: | often go walking around the streets looking for ‘throwaways’, a lot of the things | use come from rubbish heaps though. Interviewer: |s this what got you started on recycling art? Luciano: You could say that, recycling art makes efficient use of the inexpensive materials. | soon realised this when | was a poor art student struggling to pay for materials. Interviewer: What can the less creative amongst us make from recycled materials? luciano: With just a litle imagination, everyday objects which have been put in the bin can be made into art, decoration or practical household objects, like the old metal cash drawer which was made into a medicine cabinet! Interviewer: What groups or classes are available to help people discover their talents? luciano: Next week, there is a workshop which is dedicated to showing people how baskets can be made from plastic bags, using a Victorian weaving technique. Interviewer: What is your best piece of work so far, in your opinion? 95 Test Booklet - Tapescripts Luciano: |'m not sure that it is my best, but my favourite piece of work is most definitely the mosaic | made from various materials. It shows the impact of man-made disasters and how our actions harm others. Interviewer: What are your expectations for the future? luciano: My biggest hope is that one day people will understand how fragile Earth has become and will make more of an effort to recycle. Test 4A/4B Listening Presenter: ... now, here is Gemma Eastwood from ‘Fashionworld’ magazine to give us some tips on how to look good this summer. Welcome to the show, Gemma. Gemma: Thanks, it's great to be back, you know | always enjoy coming on your show. Presenter: So, Gemma, what advice do you have to help us look our best this summer? Particularly those of us who don't look like runway models. Gemma: Well, the most important thing to keep in mind is that less than 5% of the population look like runway models. However, no matter what your size and shape you can still look attractive and fashionable if you just follow a few simple rules. First of all, you should wear what suits you and you feel comfortable in. Just because something is fashionable doesn’t mean you have to wear it. For example, this summer miniskirts are back in but for those of us who have less than perfect legs it's a good idea to choose something a little more flattering. Long peasant skirts are also in style this summer so you could invest in a couple of those instead. Nowadays we have plenty of styles to choose from so it's much easier to find something that's fashionable but looks good as well. Presenter: You're absolutely right, Gemma and that's good advice for all of us. Now tell us about accessories. What is a must for the summer? Gemma: This year denim is everywhere. Not just clothing but hats, shoes, boots and even handbags. Jewellery is mostly silver and leather and summer footwear includes brightly coloured flip flops, high heeled ankle strap shoes in pastel colours and tennis shoes decorated in glitter with bright metallic stripes. Presenter: What about cosmetics? Gemma: As always, make-up should look as natural as possible. This year lipstick, nail polish and eyeshadows are in metallic shades. Silvery blues and pinks as well as golden yellows and browns are everywhere but the important thing is not to wear too much. Presenter: We've talked about women’s fashions, Gemma, but do you have any tips for our male listeners? Gemma: Of course, men’s fashions might not change as often as women’s but there are still some basic rules. First of all, it's important that young men don't wear something just because their favourite musician or sports personality does. Men, like women, should wear what they feel comfortable in and what suits them. Basics like slightly loose fitting trousers, and plain shirts are always in style. For weekends and after work jeans and baggy T shirts are a must, along with a baseball cap, a great pair of sunglasses and a comfortable pair of sneakers. Presenter: Well, unfortunately, that's all we've got time for today. Thanks for coming on the show ... Interviewer: Can you remember the first time that you performed under the Bash Street name? Simon: Oh yes! We were in France at the time, in a place called Morlaix. It was 1991 and there was an international street festival going on or ‘International Festival des Arts dans la Rue". This was the birthplace of the Bash Street Theatre Company. Interviewer: What did you do there? Simon: Well since the festival is all about street artists we included a mixture of our skills to please everybody. We treated the audience to a collection of sketches which involved circus skills, live music and silent comedy. It proved to be quite popular too. Interviewer: Where has your fame taken you so far? Simon: Apart from appearing in festivals around Britain, we've also been as far away as Hong Kong and Japan and Poland. In fact, we've performed in countries from nearly every continent of the globe! Interviewer: What do you think makes your shows such a success? Simon: Because our shows are more visual than audio, people from all over the world can appreciate our performances. Our audiences are made up of both young and old people, with children staring in disbelief at our unique acts and adults, well | presume they admire this style of theatre! Interviewer: Can you tell us what the shows involve? Simon: Yes, of course. We try to combine all of the skills of street actors and performers. This means that our shows involve acrobats, actors and jugglers. It can be quite hectic at times, but we think it works well. Interviewer: So what is your show Cliffhanger all about? Simon: Ah, Cliffhanger! I's a reminder of the past — being based on the silent movie style shows or films that audiences used to and still love. We use piano accompaniment, just like in the old style black and white films. Interviewer: What is the plot about, if there is one? Simon: Well this hour long show follows the fortunes of an unlikely hero who becomes messed up, quite innocently, in the underworld and spends his time on the run from both villains and the law. It’s an action packed family show — the scenes are bound to make you laugh, it's full of fun and antics. Interviewer: | believe that you perform for all sorts of occasions and not just in festivals Simon: That's true. We have given performances for businesses, fun days and all sorts of occasions.
