Now that youve chosen a slew of photos to consider

for your profile, its time to improve them. I know what

youre thinking. Isnt editing cheating? Wont matches
be able to tell that Ive doctored my pics? The
answers, respectively, are no and no. At this point,
were all well aware of how magazines, ads, and the like
Photoshop their imageschanging everything from the size of a
persons waistline to the eye shape to skin toneto a
point where the original person is hardly recognizable.
But thats not the type of photo editing that youre
going to do. Youre not going to come out of this
process looking like an entirely different person. In fact,
youre going to come out of it looking entirely like
yourselfjust like an even more photogenic version of
yourself. Luckily, these days you dont have to be a
Photoshop whiz to get your images looking crisp and clean.
There are dozens of apps for your smartphone or tablet
that can accomplish almost everything that professional
editing software canall with a few taps of a button
and without much knowledge of the technicalities of
photography. My advice is to use this technology to your
advantageand put each and every one of the photos that
youre considering through a photo editing app or two.
Youll be amazed at how little work can yield
dramatic results, and youll be happy with how many
previously so-so images are now grade-A profile material

If you have a lot of original point-and-shoot,

nonprofessional photos of yourself by yourself, dont be
afraid to throw a filter on one or two, especially
if youre alone in an activity shot. While its not a
steadfast rule, people are less likely to assume that
youve filtered photos of yourself (especially if youre
a man)so posting Instagrammed images helps you look
social, as though a friend took, edited, and posted
it of you. Pair this type of image with a caption about
an event or activity (even if its not exactly what was
happening at the time), and youve gone from looking
like a lone wolf to the socialite of the pack. This
technique is especially helpful if youve just had a
friend do a profile photo photoshoot for you. For
instance, if he or she snapped you on a run, filter
and add the caption My running buddy likes to document my
misery as I train for my upcoming 10K. If he or
she caught you at the stove in an apron, Whipping
up my famous Bolognese for a dinner party. As long
as youre not lying outright in your captions
