This has the potential to cause loss of life, if people stand too close to the top or the bottom of the sand cliffs. Our coastal engineer experts have told us the area that is most dangerous is the zone 4m back from the top of the sand cliff and anywhere around the base. We have marked a white line along this 4m zone, as well as placing a high fence, across Barrie Crescent Reserve to show everyone where they should not go. The same danger zone exists wherever erosion of the beach causes a vertical sand ciff, ¢.g. The beachfront north and south of the rock seawalls and at the Caravan Park. Given we are heading into the holiday period we would be very grateful if you could please pass on this safety waming to all your schools community. Particularly pressing the play safe message with your students for both sand cliffs dangers and submerged objects washed up and/or exposed during erosion events. High tides and swell are expected this weekend (28/09/19) and this could lead to further erosion. If this occurs City of Newcastle (CN) will remark the 4m danger exclusion zone.
