Description:

The boot sequence is very important for troubleshooting hardware issues on a CLARiiON storage processor (SP).
Knowing the right sequence gives a full view of the hardware status of the SP while it is set to run.

Resolution:

Both sets of LEDs on each SP will show the same activity:

1. At initial power-up, the Power LED will be on and the Fault LED will be off while the power supplies and the
voltages on the SP stabilizes.

2. The first stage in the SP boot sequence is the BIOS test. This is indicated by the Power LED on and the Fault LED
blinking at a rate of once every 4 seconds (.25 Hz).

3. The second stage in the SP boot sequence is the SP Power On Self-Test (POST). This is indicated by the Power
LED on and the Fault LED blinking at a rate of once a second (1 Hz). Extended POST checks every PROM
checksum on the array.

4. The third stage in the SP boot sequence is the OS boot and driver load. This is indicated by the Power LED on and
the Fault LED blinking at the rate of 4 times a second (4 Hz).

5. Pushing the Non-Maskable Interrupt (NMI) button will cause a panic dump of memory and reboot the SPs. This
should only be performed at the request of EMC Engineering or Tech Support 2. The Fault LED will blink at twice a
second (2 Hz) after the NMI button is pushed.

6. The FC Link LEDs will be GREEN if running at 1Gb/sec or 2Gb/sec. They will be BLUE if the speed is 4Gb/sec.
For an invalid signal—caused by a poor connection, bad cable, or a bad/unsupported SFP—the FC Link LEDs will
flash BLUE/GREEN.
