The dog weighs 2.3 kgs, has a body condition score of 2.5/5, and is in aood post-mortem condition, There is a supemumerary right maxillary premolar and a crown fracture on tooth #304. There is a mild to moderate amount of pale tan to pink frothy liquid in the lumen ofthe trachea, and there is a single 0.5 x 1.0cm dark. ‘ed focus on the tracheal mucosa just caudal tothe larynx. On cut section of the lungs, a moderate amount of pink, frothy liquid is released. There is moderate, multifocal to coalescing dark red to dark purple streaking within the smooth muscle of the diaphragm. “There are two dark red foci extending from the epicardial surface ofthe heart, through the myocardium, and to the endocardium: the larger focus (1.5 x 0.5 cm) Is located in the right ventricle adjacent to the coronary band, and the smaller focus (0.6 x 0.5 em) is located in the left ventricle near the apex. The heart weighs 21 grams, ‘Across the duodenal and jejunal mucosa, there are a few, multifocal to coalescing, dark red to purple foci. There are several, small (1- 3mm), multifocal, dark red foci across the capsular surface of the spleen. The liver weighs 127 grams (6.5% of BW), Pathologic anatomic diagnos: Trachea: Submucosal hemorrhage, mild, acute, focal Diaphragm: Intramuscular hemorrhage, moderate, acute, multifocal to coalescing Heart: Myocardial hemorrhage, mild, acute, multifocal ‘Spleen: Subcapsular hemorthage, mild, acute, multifocal ‘Additional Samples Collected: Liver, brain, kidney, thymus, adipose tissue, and stomach contents were frozen and will be saved for 60 days from the date of autopsy. If additional testing is indicated, iis the clinician's/owner’s responsiblity to contact the attending pathologist or pathology resident to ‘consult regarding further diagnostic testing. Please recognize that further testing will incur additional costs which are based on the type of testing required. If you would lke to inquire into futher testing, please contact our office at 614-247-4796 or 614-292-9704 ‘Comments/intorpretation: ‘The cause of mortality was not apparent at autopsy. The most significant gross finding was the multifocal hemorrhages found in several tissues, including the diaphragm, myocardium, splenic capsule, tracheal mucosa; however, the cause of hemorrhage was not ‘grossly identifiable. Additionally, the quantty of hemorrhage was mild and not likely sufficient to have resulted in hypovolemic ‘cardiovascular collapse. The meningeal surfaces of the brain and cervical spinal cord were within normal limits; however, sectioning of Page 1 of 3 The Ohio State University Voterinary Medical Center Clinical Diagnostic Laboratories THE Onto STATE UNIVERSITY coum, OF 48210 VETERINARY MEDICAL CENTER Your VMC Clinician: (614) 292-3551 Appliod Pathology: (614) 247-4795 Clinical Pathology: (614) 292-7951 Microbiology: (614) 292-7956 Parasitology: (614) 292-8328 lien Patient: ‘Age: SYLVIA STAFFORD AB400900 FEIVEL* 7 Month(s)‘ LAB400900, 708 WOODINGTON BLVD Canine, M VADDS Case #: 19-403141"¢ pArASI brain ‘Fequires 24 to 48 hours of formalin fixation. A significant finding was mid mulifocal hemorrhage present in multiple tissues. Certain conditions (ie. toxicities) may produce mild hemorthage with no other definitive abnormalities, and as inthis case, the cause of morbidly cannot not be determined ftom gross ‘or microscopic findings. Acute myofiber necrosis inthe skeletal muscle (thigh muscle) also could be due to toxin exposure or nutitional (Selenium and Vitamin E) deficiency. Of note, there was hemonthage in the heart, which could have obscured sublle lesions of cardiomyocyte degeneration and necrosis. Most ofthe recognized etiologies of muscle necrosis (monensin) in lage animals can also affect dogs, butts rarely reported in the iterature. The cause of the eosinophilic granulomas within the wall of the colon could nt be identified, however this type of finding may occur with endoparasitsm, migrating foreign materia, etc. The significance of the skeletal muscle necrosis could not be determined. Liver, brain, kidney, thymus, adipose issue, and stomach contents will be saved for 60 days from the date of autopsy. Resident: Betsy Pray, DVM, MS Pathologist: Rachel Cianciolo, VMD, PhD, DACVP.
