Massachusetts has played a leading role in American politics since the arrival of
the first colonists. In the 18th century, spurred by a booming maritime trade,
Massachsetts colonists revolted against trade restrictions imposed by Great Britain.
British attempts to put down the revolt resulted in the 1770 Boston Massacre, which
became a rallying cry to action. In 1773, angered by a new British imposed tax on
tea, colonists raided three British merchant ships and dumped their cargo of tea into
Boston Harbor known as the Boston Tea Party, This tax revolt against the crown set
the stage for the battles that started the American Revolution.
In the 19th century Massachusetts became the center of the World´s whaling
industry, bringing unprecedented wealth to the islands of Nantucket and Martha´s
Vineyard, whose ports are still lined with grand sea captain´s homes. Also, the state
became a center of the textile, woolen and tanning industries, which often bired
women and inmmigrants at low pay.
