When cold water or ice block(utilizing chilled mixing water) is used to
accomplish the control of cement tempreture during hydration
reaction. Ice water or chilled water slows the cement hydration reaction. To ensure that the tempreture are not too high in hot weather, to allow proper strentgth development and durability of the concrete. By using chilled mixing water or mixing water with ice, can slow the hydration process down so that it can successfully cure. He quantiy of chilled water should not exceed the mixing water requirment and the maximum reduction in concrete temperature that can be obtained is approximately 10°F and for ice water is 20°F. Ice has two ways of cooling effects. First, it draws heat from the concrete for melting of ice, then the resulting water at 32°F provides containing cooling capacity. Considrt this, if the tempreture of the concrete during hydration is too high, it will cause lower durability. The concrete will have high early strength but will gain less strength in the later stage.
