Over the years, many studies have been incorporated into the reduction of

Styrofoam waste and usage of concrete on the slab of a structure since it

affects the dimensions of the subsequent beams, columns, and foundations.

An alternative was the elimination of the middle strip of a concrete slab’s

section since it has little contribution to its structural performance.

The use of a polystyrene voided slab is of prime importance upon the

reduction of the weight and usage of concrete during construction without any

major compromise on the strength of the structure. The hollowed cavities

within the concrete slab would act like a two-way spanning slab in which it

would decrease its load and increase its capacity. In line with the reduction of

self-weight of the members and smaller sizes of footings, the production of an

expensive concrete material would also lessen due to the lesser volume of

concrete use. As a result, it would also decrease the usage of other materials

such as reinforcements and aggregates.

Studies have also shown that the CO2 emission of concrete has increased

during its production up to its construction use. In which case, it contributes to

the alarming destruction of the ozone and could adversely affect the

environment. By using a hollowed concrete slab, the use of such materials

during construction could potentially be lessened. The environmental

restrictions imposed in the field of mining upon the collection of raw materials

for its production would also be solved. The study also utilizes the use of a

recyclable Styrofoam material during the production of spherical polystyrene to

reduce its adverse effects on the environment and wastage of such material.
