Al fittings and bushings are also of 4130N steel. There are no heat-treated members in the fuselage. The front section of the fuselage from the rear spar forward and including the engine mount have been oven stress-relieved in order to prevent stress concentrations from the welding operation. For corrosion control all oil passage holes are drilled at the intersections of all tubes and clusters. Hot linseed oil is then pumped into the fuselage frame and drained, This oil adheres to the inside walls of the tubing. The exterior of the fuselage frame is then sand-blasted and painted with AG Air Yellow Epoxy which is resistant to nearly all chemical action, The fuselage lower and upper skins are attached to the fuselage frame with stainless screws and nuts. The fuselage side panels are of heavy gauge 2024T3 alclad and are attached to stainless camloc receptacle. This allows the side panels to be removed in minutes, leaving the fuselage frame open for thorough cleaning and inspection. Al skins are mounted with clearance between the skin and the fuselage tubing so that chemicals will not collect and cause corrosion, and a thin strip of neoprene is provided to prevent chafing. Unt A50 As ad Spm a WINGS ‘The wing structure is full cantilever, with the main spar carrying all of the bending loads, Construction is of 202473 alelad for skins and spar webs. Thick wing skins are employed neat the wing root with a gradual drop in thickness at cach skin lap as wing loads diminish No span-wise stringers are used in order to simplify construction and repairs, and for that reason wrinkles in the upper skins between the ribs will be noticed during manocuvres. The upper spar cap is 202473 material, but the lower spar cap is made of alloy steel for a long fatigue life. The wing utilizes a NACA 4415 wing section and has 2 degrees of washout twist, which results in very gentle stall characteristics. 802’s have 2.5 degrees of washout. ‘The leading edge is extra heavy with a leading edge doubler bonded internally to minimize denting. Each wing panel has the leading edge divided into five different pieces to allow easy replacement. Universal head rivets are used to facilitate the removal and replacement of leading edge sections. ‘The fuel tanks are located in the inboard section of the wing and are an integral part of the structure. ‘The closely riveted seams and heavy skins make them burst resistant in the event of a crash, Sealing is accomplished by an application of Product Research PR-1422A2 sealing compound*, The board end of the wing is sealed against chemical entry and the aileron pushrod has a flexible boot attached to prevent entry of chemical at the pushrod location. A complete wire bundle for night ‘working lights is installed inside the wing during assembly so that lights may be added at a later date. epeap500 Ae Sram oe ‘The upper spar cap is painted with yellow polyurethane paint and the lower spar is cadium plated and primed with Chromanoxide primer for corrosion protection, All other parts inside the wing are treated with alodine and primed with zine chromate primer prior to assembly. ‘The main spar caps of each wing are attached to each other with upper and lower attach blocks. The "upper spar caps blocks are installed using 10 bolts and the lower spar cap blocks 14 bolts. There are four tube-nut welded assemblies and two sleeves in each wing installation to take the “kick-load” due to dihedral angle, and cancel it out by transferring this load from the upper spar caps to the lower spar caps. ‘The main spar webs are attached to cach other with a single fail-safe plate of Ys inch thickness. Citra Aime Sys mal “Two wing attach angles are used to attach the wing main spar to the fuselage vertical tube just aft of the main spar, A steel plate attaches the upper spar cap block to the fuselage along the aircraft centre line, The rear spar is attached to the fuselage frame with a single bolt. Weide and Spe moe AILERONS The ailerons are of all-metal construction, hinged on ball bearings and are operated by push-pull tubes. The bell cranks and pushrod ends operate on ball bearings, producing smooth operation and Tow system friction. The stick forces are light and the ailerons are very responsive. The light stick forces are a result of the installation of aerodynamic servo tabs installed on the outboard end of each, aileron, Fixed, bendable tabs are provided for aileron trim, ‘The ailerons are interconnected with the wing flaps so that as the flaps move down, the ailerons droop. The interconnection is non-linear so that most of the aileron droop occurs with the first half of the flap travel. This is achieved by bell cranks attached to the flap torque tube. This provides optimum conditions for short field take-off performance. Each aileron has a large balance weight on the outboard end of the aileron just forward of the leading edge. These weights must never be removed, as they are necessary for flutter prevention, tte A Aine mam ne FLAPS Extra large Fowler-type flaps are incorporated on the Air Tractor. The flaps are electrically operated and may be stopped at any position from 0° to the maximum 26°, The flaps are controlled by a switch conveniently mounted just below the throttle quadrant or on the stick, The flaps have ‘external markings, which may be viewed from the cockpit with each of the first two marks being 10° of travel. ‘The flap actuator and electric motor is attached to the left hand side of the airframe above the fuel header tank, The actuator assembly has a worm drive, which is threaded externally to match the threads of a “tee” assembly. The “tee” assembly is attached to two arms that bolted to the torque tube. Push rods attach the flaps to the extreme ends of the torque tube. Micro switches located on the airframe above the right side of the torque tube, are used to limit the down and up travel of the flaps. Cteeepitee ASA nd Syme ne =10- EMPENNAGE ‘The horizontal stat ers are all-metal and strut supported for rigidity. ‘The vertical fin is cantilever and is of all-metal construction. It has a relatively short span in order to minimize the hazards of working under telephone lines or other obstructions. A heavy-duty wire deflector cable is attached to the top of the vertical fin and extends to the top of the canopy where it is anchored. ELEVATORS The elevators are of all-metal construction and are attached to the stabilizers and to the pedestal in the fuselage with AN4-10A bolts. Elevator travel is 29° up, 16° down, !1°, The elevator trim tabs act as servo tabs in addition to providing longitudinal trim, Because of the large tab size, the trim provides a considerable amount of trim authority. Use AON Anat Sema ne tee p AO Asm aS cane -12- RUDDER ‘The all-metal rudder is attached to the vertical fin with three AN4-10A bolts. Rudder control stops are at the rudder horn and the rudder travel is 21° Left, or 21° Right. The rudder controls consist of large stainless cables. Springs interconnect between the rudder and the aileron system to reduce the effects of adverse yaw. A trim-boost tab is incorporated which is adjustable on the ground. enpt Dep ATU Adm nd Syma Nene ATA Amn Sy oa -14- LANDING GEAR A spring type main and tail landing gear is used on the Air Tractor. This type of landing gear provides @ minimum of maintenance, low drag and considerable energy absorption for hard landings. In addition, a very smooth ride is provided for operations from rough strips. ‘The main gear and tailwheel spring are machined from aircraft quality steel, formed, heat treated, shot-peened for fatigue resistance and magnafluxed for eracks. ‘The main gear will fit either side of the aircraft and are attached to the airframe by three bolts, two of which clamp down onto a clamp block. Tapered aluminium shims are used between the axle and main gear leg to provide the proper camber and toe in. The tailwheel spring is also attached to the airframe by three bolts, one forward and two rear, clamping down onto a clamp block. ‘The tail wheel fork is of welded 4130N tubing construction. A tail wheel locking mechanism is provided and the tailwheel may be unlocked by pushing the control stick forward. This lifts the stainless locking pin out of the tail wheel fork and allows the tail wheel assembly to swivel 360°. Heavy wall tubing surrounds the crew like a roll cage, and a skid bar on the top of the cockpit provides additional protection in the event of an overturn, ‘Aluminium enclosure skins and control push rod boots isolates the cockpit from the rest of the aircraft to prevent entry of chemical and dust. Entry to the cockpit is via two downward opening doors. Two quick release the airframe, which allows the doors to be jettisoned in the event of an emergency. hinge the door to The windshield comprises of two plexiglass sections with a windshield support beam located on the centreline. ‘The instrument panel is in three sections. The upper panel contains the instruments most often used for flight. The centre panel allows for the installation of communication equipment, GP: transponder etc, The lower panel contains circuit breakers, switches and dials. Both occupants have a control stick and rudder pedals for flight control. The pilot in the left seat has access to a full set of engine controls (power lever, propeller control lever, condition lever) and the elevator trim, The occupant in the right seat only has access to an engine throttle lever. -16- The power lever has an idle stop and cannot be moved into the reverse range without moving the trigger at the top of the lever forward. The start lever has a latch that prevents inadvertent movement below the “Run” position that would shut off the fuel in flight. All solo flight must be conducted from the left seat. The seats are cantilevered structure, designed to absorb crash forces by folding down when excessive loads are reached. They are adjustable up and down along slat rails, and locked in position with two “T” pins. Rudder pedals are adjustable on the ground by removing the pin and sliding the rudder pedals in the aluminium channel to the desired position and reinserting the “T” pin. Te HOPPER ‘The hopper is made of Derakane and is heat-cured for greater chemical resistance. The capacity is 480US gallons/ 1817 Ltrs. The hopper vent tube is welded 3” diameter stainless tubing. A stainless ball is used to seal off the overboard vent when liquid level reaches the top of the hopper. The vent tube protruding from the lower fuselage skin can be rotate to point forward to provide positive pressure in the hopper for dry material application. ‘The standard hopper lid is manually opened, and is locked down by a sturdy over-centre latch assembly. The majority of Australian Air Tractors have modified this arrangement by incorporating an electric or hydraulic lid, operated by the Pilot via the cockpit. A large hopper window between the instrument panels allows visual confirmation on product remaining. Hopper Rinse System A hopper rinse tank is located forward of the firewall and may be filled with tap water for hopper rinse. To rinse the hopper after spray chemicals are expended turn the rinse switch ON for a sufficient time for water to clean the hopper walls, then OFF. ‘The pump will empty the 18 gallon tank in approximately 1/4 minutes. -18- HEATING Plumbing OWOff Valve Diffuser ‘An optional feature on all Air Tractors is the cockpit heater. Hot air is taken from the compressor section of the engi and routed to a valve forward of the cockpit. The valve is opened by pulling up on the knob located between the seats on the cockpit floor. The amount of heat can be regulated by the amount of valve opening. Hot air is piped to the diffuser on the forward side of the cockpit floor. {ltenrtelapA4 Aenea Sena ua doe -19- AIR CONDITIONER Components Engine driven compressor Condenser Evaporator Block expansion valve ‘Vents and cockpit controls Description ‘The Air Tractor uses a gas-cycle air conditioning system for climate control. ‘This versatile air conditioning system allows the pilot to select ram air from outside, ot to recireulate cockpit air, or a combination of the two. The ram-air control is located between the seats on the cockpit floor. All control switches for the air conditioning system are located on the pilot’s panel. The pilot can use the main switch to turn the air conditioner ON or OFF or to enable only the evaporative blower fan. ‘The evaporative blower switch is used to control the blower speed as HIGH or LOW. use 4 Aim nd Syma oe -20- BRAKES Components Fluid reservoii Master brake cylinders. Park brake valve. Hose assembly. Brake disc, Brake assembly — torque plate, callipers, linings. The Air Tractor uses Cleveland brake components. Each brake assembly has three pistons which incorporates four drag ring which holds the piston against the backing plate of the lining so that excessive pedal travel is not required. This allows for positive brake action. The parking brake valve incorporates two valves mounted together with a common lever to pull the valve to the “on” position. To set the park brake, both brake pedals must be depressed prior to setting “on” to release, depress brake pedals. Ameen TL Ae nd Sr -21- INDUCTION SYSTEM Components Ramair scoop Filter Pressure differential switch Warning light Alternate Air Description ‘The induction system is the Air Tractor Ram Air Induction System. In this system, air flows, through a scoop located in the nose of the aircraft, through a large curved filter, and straight into the engine inlet. ‘A pressure differential switch is installed on the top right hand side of the aft firewall with one probe in the engine area and the other probe in the plenum. At such time that the pressure difference between the air in the engine area and the air in the plenum is 12 inches of water or more, the air filter light on the instrument panel will come on. This light has a “push to test” feature and should be checked before the engine is started. If the filter light comes “ON”, have the filters inspected and cleaned as soon as practical. In the event of an obstruction in the Ram Ait Scoop, ot a blockage of the actual Air Filter, an alternate source of unfiltered air is provided through a door located at the rear of the plenum which is operated by the pilot from within the cockpit. sta ASO Ai -2- FUEL SYSTEM Components Filters. Puel tanks. Fuel tank senders and gauges. Electric pump. Fuel selector. Engine driven pump. Fuel heater Fuel pressure gauge. Fuel pressure warning light, Description The fuel tanks are located in the inboard section of the wing and are an integral part of the structure. An overboard vent is located for each near the wing tip. Both fuel tanks are interconnected by a venting line, Each tank has a finger strainer that is part of the 90° elbow at the tank outlet. The fuel tank sendets use float arms to determine fuel quantity. The L/H sender has a shorter float arm than the R/H sender, which results in the R/H tank gauge showing about 1/8 full at the same moment the L/H tank indicates empty. A low fuel warning light is incorporated on the instrument panel. The fuel quantity in each fuel tank is displayed on panel-mounted micro ampmeter fuel gauges, which are marked in fractions of useable fuel Vs Ye Ys 38 =F. Both tanks gravity feed into a small header tank which is located behind the hopper and below the rear spar attach tube. Fuel then flows from the header tank to the airplane firewall, via the electric fuel boost pump and fuel selector. The electric boost pump is used for start up, shut down, and emergencies. ‘The fuel selector is located within easy reach of the pilot, and is marked “MAIN” and “OFF”, There ccan be no tank selection since both tanks are interconnected, From the firewall, fuel flows through a large commercial fuel filter to the engine driven pump, which is mounted on the engine vacuum drive pad ‘This pump is set to a pressure of approximately 18 psi with the engine operating at 80% power. The engine manufacturer requires that a minimum pressure of 5 psi is being delivered to the fel control unit at all times, with a maximum pressure of 20 psi. A fuel pressure switch and warning light has been installed. If the fuel pressure warning light comes on, or fuel pressure drops below 15 psi, the electric boost pump should be turned “ON”, and a landing made as soon as possible. A fuel pressure gauge mounted in the cockpit measures fuel pressure from the outlet of the engine driven pump. ‘The fuel lines continue from the engine driven pump to the fuel heater body. Fuel is heated to prevent ice crystal formation, which can restriet downstream filters and components. Lines from this point on are furnished to the engine. When the engine is shut down a line vents excess fuel from the flow control valve back to the fuel tanks. There are four fuel drains in the fuel system: one in each tank, one for the header tank and one for the fuel selector valve. These drains should be activated daily. -2B- #IMPORTANT NOTE: FUEL IMBALANCE Due to the interconnection of the fuel tanks, fuel imbalance can result from migration of fuel from ‘one tank to the other, or uneven fuel flow to the header tank. If one tank runs dry, the engine wil flame out even though substantial fuel is remaining in the other tank, This situation can be caused by a number of reasons: Flying the aircraft ina slip or skip condi Refuelling one tank only and expecting Turning in one direction ie racetrack. Parking the aircraft on an uneven or slanted surface, Blocked tank vent or partially blocked finger strainer. Fuel cap looser on one side than the other. yn (main reason). feed into the other. ae eeNe ‘The imbalance can be corrected by either turning in the opposite direction, or skidding the aircraft with wings level (fuel will go in the direction of the ball in the slip indicator). ‘A general rule is to refuel when a quantity gauge indicates ¥4, Fuel capacity varies from aircraft to aircraft and with various models. The standard fuel capacity of an Air Tractor 504 is 795 litres useable, 818 litres total.
