Description of the Event

To commemorate the 50 years of Apollo 11 mission, SEDS VIT organised the event “Eagle has Landed”. The event was the
first one in the new session and was aimed to provide the students with further insight into the famous moon landing
mission conducted by NASA in 1969.

 The event started off by explaining the students about the need of such a mission, the various components and parts
of the Saturn 5 rocket and the required parameters to calculate the trajectory for the mission. To help the students
understand the distance between the Earth and Moon, an activity with the help of sports balls of apt sizes was
conducted to give them a basic idea.
 This was followed by discussing the various difficulties the crew faced during the final stages of moon landing, an
interactive debate on the various conspiracy theories surrounding the moon landing and the astronauts journey back
home along with the need of quarantining them for almost a month.
 Apart from the Apollo eleven mission, some light was shed on the tragedy of Apollo 13 mission and the rescue mission
which followed it. Also, topics like Twin Paradox, Time Dilation and Space Settlement were also discussed using their
portrayals in Hollywood movies to keep the students hooked up to the discussion.
