1.) What are the potential post anesthetic problems that the nurse might expect with Mr.
Richard?
2.) What nursing interventions would be appropriate to prevent these complications from
occurring?
• To prevent short term memory loss orient the patient to their location and the
time multiple times daily
• Making sure the older person has their glasses and/or hearing aids since Mr.
Richard has a hearing problem
• To prevent PONV give Morphine as ordered by doctor because use of other
analgesics such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and regional blocks,
should be implemented can help to reduce the PONV.
• Administering acetaminophen as ordered by doctor during surgery may reduce
the incidence of postoperative shivering.
3.) What factors may predispose Mr. Richard to the following problems: atelectasis,
infection, pulmonary embolism, nausea and vomiting? Why?
• Atelectasis:
➢ Buildup of mucus in the airways
➢ Older age
➢ Confinement to bed with infrequent changes of position
➢ Recent general anesthesia
• Infection:
➢ Presence of Jackson Pratt Drain
➢ Slow healing process because of Mr. Richard’s age (74)
➢ No family or friends to assist with care (wound care)
• Pulmonary Embolism:
➢ Have been inactive or immobile for long periods of time
➢ Having surgery or have broken a bone
➢ Having had severe injuries, burns, or fractures of the hips or thigh bone
➢ Older age
• Nausea and Vomiting:
➢ Use of anesthesia during surgery
4.) How should it be determined when Mr. Richard is sufficiently recovered from general
anesthesia to be discharged to the clinical unit?
5.) What potential postoperative problems might the nurse on the clinical unit expect?
• Infection on surgical sites because there is no relatives for Mr. Richard to care
for him
• Nausea and Vomiting
• Pain on the surgical site
• Fever because of infection
NO COLLABORATIVE PROBLEMS
