Harrison Ford has starred in three of the latest and most
successful films: "Star Wars", The Empire Strikes
Back" and "Raiders of the Lost Arc".
But success didn't come to him overnight — he had been
an actor long before the first of the three films had crowds
around cinemas all over the world, and, meanwhile he had to
work as a carpenter for eight years.
Here is an interview with him:
REPORTER: — Well, Harrison, tell us something about your
early life.
HARRISON: — I was born in Chicago in 1942, went to Ripon College in Wisconsin
REPORTER: — Did anyone or anything influence your decision?
HARRISON: — No, I don't think so. My ambition had always been to do actor's work. I thought
it would be fun to do different things all the time, to go to different places.
REPORTER: — Was it easy for you to enter the world of cinema?
HARRISON: — On the contrary, it was very difficult.
REPORTER: — But you are a very successful actor…
HARRISON: — Well, but before that I had to become a carpenter for eight years. I built
furniture.
REPORTER: — How interesting! Did you stop acting then?
HARRISON: — No, in fact I still acted but only in roles I really wanted to play.
REPORTER: — Was the role of Han Solo in Star Wars one of those?
HARRISON: — Yes, but I had to wait a long time before I was offered the role. I was
enthusiastic about that comicbook character and I tried to make it seem real. I think I succeeded.
REPORTER: — Of course you did! The film's massive success owes a lot to your work. And what
about the films that followed?
HARRISON: — Well, I tried to play characters who were more real, but they all flopped. The
public obviously wanted me to be a man of few words with strong fists and an ironic sense of
humour. Nothing else.
REPORTER: — A similar character to Han Solo was Dr Indiana Jones, the hero of Raiders of the
Lost Arc. What do you think of that film?
HARRISON: — Well. I enjoyed doing it and the film has been a hit all over the world.
REPORTER: — If you stopped acting what career would you choose?
HARRISON: — I think I'd become a carpenter again. I love it.
REPORTER: — Any plans for the future?
HARRISON: — I intend to go on with my career as an actor and play only the roles that I really
like.
