HALBERT EN 101-035 FALL 2019

INTRODUCTION LETTER
Due by 11:59pm on September 8, 2019
Worth 10% of total class grade
Approx. 500-750 words

ASSIGNMENT:
I’ve written a letter to the class to introduce myself and let you know my goals for this class.
Please write me back with a letter that introduces yourself and sets your own goals for this
class and this semester.

Make sure your letter does the following:

• Gives me an idea of who you are with descriptive details from your life
• Discusses some of your past experiences with writing and/or composing in general
• Meditates upon some specific intentions you have for your development as a writer,
student, and/or citizen of the world
• Identifies the habits of mind you are interested in focusing on this semester
• Shows stylistic intention (i.e. there is reasoning in how you have structured your letter).

AUDIENCE AND PURPOSE:

As your instructor, I am the first audience member for this letter. However, it will have many
other audience members including your future-self. You will return to this letter at the end of
the semester to help you reflect upon where you started and the progress you’ve made.
Additionally, your peers may read this letter during class exercises. Finally, you’ll have the
chance to read your letter at the end of semester ePortfolio showcase event in order to reach
a wider audience of UA students.

Think about this letter as a chance to start a conversation about writing with me, yourself, and
your peers.

FORMAT:
Follow MLA format -- paper should be typed, double-spaced, 12-pt Times New Roman font
or other similar font, standard 1” or 1.25” margins.
