This week I had the opportunity to take a deeper look into a community close to my own,
Modesto, California. I currently live in Patterson, CA which is about 25 minutes from Modesto,
our counties main city. We visit Modesto for many things, so I thought it may be best if I got the
opportunity to take a hard look at the demographics and learn about the people in the city.
Modesto is a fairly large city with about 214,000 residence, with the main races being White at
46% and Hispanic at 37%. Modesto is surrounded by agricultural land and many of its residence
are farm/land owners. The average income is around $54,000 dollars, and compared to the rest of
the state, Modesto’s residents make less than others. This is interesting to me because since I
have moved to the Central Valley of California, I have noticed more and more people moving
from the bay area due to the fact that rent is more expensive in the Bay than a mortgage in the
Valley. We moved and bought a house for that very reason; rent in San Jose, where we use to
live, was more expensive than a mortgage in Stanislaus County with the average home costing,
$236,000.
Some data that was confirmed for me this week was the percentages of race located in
Modesto, I had a feeling that most of the people living in modest were either White or Hispanic,
but the research from this week confirmed my observations. I was surprised to see how small of
percentages all of the other races had, each being less than 10% of the population.
This week I had a few struggles, I had a hard time finding the percentages of children in
poverty, many online resources that I found split up the age groups so I had to do a bit of math to
figure out a solid number. I did find the U.S. Census Bureau to be a very helpful tool in the
process, and it was a very interesting read. I also struggled with the realization that many
Modesto residence do not continue their education after High School. I was disappointed to read
that only 19.2% of the population had a bachelor’s degree or higher. I assumed because of how
many colleges are located around Northern and Central California, many more people would
have access to programs and obtain a higher degree.
