Assistive Technology

Some students with disabilities often have trouble focusing in the classroom setting. One

technology that has been developed for students with auditory processing disorder is a personal

FM system. These devices have a microphone for the teacher and headphones for the student or

students who need them. With these devices, the teacher’s voice goes directly into the student’s

ears; this has extraordinary benefits for students who demonstrate difficulty focusing on what is

being said.

Whether a student has a hearing impairment, an attention disorder, or an auditory

processing disorder, they often display lower speech-perception scores, lower academic scores,

and psychosocial problems. The personal FM system has the ability to improve a student’s

speech-perception which then improves their academic scores and psychosocial problems. With

the teacher’s voice going directly into the student’s ear, the student has a better ability to

understand and focus on what is being said.
