BACK Once in a while, we encounter architecture that challenges
GROUND our mind to ask:

First, WHAT is that building? Perhaps because the

building is unusual, non-conformist, magnificent in
size, or spectacular in visual impact.

Next we might ask, WHY is that building like that?...

why is it unusual or non-conformist or magnificent or
spectacular.

Finally, our curiosity should bring us to know HOW

that building became that way. And one effective way
is to probe the mind of the idiosyncratic architect who
designed it.
BACK
GROUND There are numerous such architects, some known like

ANTONIO GAUDI who is

famous for his Sagrada
Familia and many other
beautiful buildings in
Barcelona,

and his famous Falling

and others unknown, who have made a mark in

the practice through the design of SPECIAL
BUILDINGS, deserving of our attention to help
prepare us for the eventual design of such type
of architecture .
DEFINITION A special category of buildings has been derived and
called “Special Buildings” which are labeled singular or
unique architectural design works by virtue of :

• the relationship between the function for which the

building was designed and the aesthetics of the final
building result. The balance achieved in this
undertaking is often a good measure of its success.

DEFINITION

result.

DEFINITION • the relationship between the form of the structure and
the durable load-bearing elements which comprise it.

…… WATER TOWERS!
DEFINITION • the use of raw materials that determine the form and
structure of the building as well as its relationship with
the setting, impacted by their appearance and their
functional properties (thermodynamic, mechanical,
electronic, etc.) Examples are natural and artificial
rock, aggregates, metal, organic materials, plastics,

Underground House
DEFINITION
• raw materials

structure, the
setting, and
their
functional
properties

Mud House
DEFINITION • the relationship of building with the abstract concept
of time, including visionary design that may be viewed
as an architectural experiment projected into the
future, based on revolutionary technology, the
application of innovative construction techniques, and
the use of modern materials.

DEFINITION
• abstract

• finally, the treatment of light, the generating force of

all plasticity.
DEFINITION Special Buildings possess clear functional and aesthetic
intent fashioned by the idiosyncratic style of the
architect, and apply subjective, impossible-to-formulate
all-embracing, wide-ranging aesthetic design principles.

Here you see spaces that start out as square or rectangles
