DIRECT LESSON PLAN

I. Describe the Class

• This is a high school English class consisting of 35 students that are in grade 10.

II. Subject/Skill:

• Arthur Miller’s- “The Crucible”


• Comprehension of the work

III. Objective(s)

• Understand the historical facts of the Salem Witch Trials


• Recognize certain historical concepts about Salem witch trials related to “The
Crucible” such as slavery, witch-hunts, hate groups.

IV. Procedures

• Have students sit down in assigned seating


• Take attendance
• Hand out copies of play “The Crucible” -students should already have completed
reading of the play at this point.
• Also hand out copy of printed text I printed for students to become familiar with
the time period of the Salem witch trials. This text gives historical over view.
• We will be writing a 4-page paper on the play
• Allow students time to read the article about the Salem witch trials - 15 mins for
this
• In this 15 mins write the 10 vocabulary words provided, on the board.
(protagonist, antagonist, plot, point of view, voice, theme, acts and scenes, rising
and falling action, climax, irony)
• Discuss the vocabulary words while students take notes on definition
• Allow students to ask questions on any vocabulary they do not understand.
• Go over the historical accuracy of the play and how it related to the article
provided.
• Have the students pick a topic for their paper and write it down to hand in. This
will not be their final topic/thesis but this will gauge where they are at I
comprehension of the story.
• Leave the last 10 mins of class for discussion about the play
V. Materials

• Copy of “The Crucible”


• Copy of the Salem With Trails article (students can keep and write on)
• Pen/paper to write proposed thesis

VI. Grouping Structures

• No groups for this discussion

VII. Modifications

• If discussion results in the class not seeming to grasp the ideas of the play allow
for further discussion and we will write proposed thesis statements next class.

VIII. Assessment

• Students will be graded on their research paper that will be submitted at the end of
the quarter. Go over thesis statements and give students feedback on direction to
take for paper.
