Instructor
Objectives
1. To be able to construct a replica of a link.

2. To know the functions of the link.

3. To be trained in the shop operation.

4. To enable the students to know and use other types of hand tools

List of Materials
1. Files – these are the tools used for shaping and forming the wooden piece into the desired
shape and edge with particular smoothing.

2. Try Square – these tool is used to measure in inches and in pieces of wood especially in
woodworking and this tool is also accurate in measuring an angle or 90 degrees .
3. Back Saw- The type of saw used to make straight cuts and basically contain a metal
stiffening rib on top to provide precise cuts.

4. Compass Saw- This particular type of saw is used to make precise and small cuts , in this
particular experiment we used this after drilling the hole on the inside part of the wood in
order to cut and form the hole.

5. Sand Paper- We used this tool or material to have a smooth and fine finish on the wood in
the experiment.
1
6. 1 piece solid wood (5’’ x 12’’ x1’’)- This material is the main object in our experiment and
it is the one to be modified to form the desired specifications that the instructor has given
to us.

Procedures
1. First is to make an outline on the first side of the wooden block, mark the sides to be
tapered, to be cut and shaped.
2. Put the wooden block on the bench vise and cut one side with the 0.25 inch mark and cut
it by 2 inches. Do the same on the other side.

3. Taper the marked sides in circular form

4. On the mark side of the wood, start to taper from half of the side to the top part of
5. Make the Core print, by making the core print make cuts of circle with .75 inch of diameter that is
tapered to .625 inch diameter on top

6. Stick the core print on the edge of the modified wooden block according to the instructions of
the instructor.

Topic Questions & Answers
1. What is working drawing?

 Working drawing is a guide drawing with specified details to provide

information to aid the plan of executing an operation or replication
without additional information.

2. What is a bill of materials?

 Bill of materials is the list of materials which indicates a list of items
and guides used in operations to clarify measurements and also the total
costs and it is essential in making the final product.

3. What are the concepts of a complete planning operation?

 Make necessary objectives

 Activities to be executed
 Quality Control
 Desired outcomes
 Statements of responsibilities and authorities delegated
 Specific Operational Process for the system

4. What is in your mind in making this project?

 In making this project, it comes to my mind that we should make this
project as fast and at the same time as perfect as we expected to because
it will be an improvement for us to be productive with our works in the
future.
5. In the draftsman language what do they call the 8 ½” x 11” coupon bond?
 Isometric Bond Paper is another term called in 8 ½” x 11” coupon bond
6. What requires a good working drawing?

 A good working drawing represent all the ideas needed in the working
area and it includes all the information about the structure of the
subject so that there is no problem that will be acquired during the
production.

7. What is the difference between an air-dry lumber and a kiln dry lumber?

 A kiln dry lumber shows that the wood has no color because it is like
cooked and it dries faster than other wood and air dried lumber is a
natural way to dry a wood but slower but it makes the wood retain its
natural color.

8. What are the classifications of lumber?

 All lumber comes from trees and it is referred to as either softwood or

hardwood, it nis somewhat confusing because some softwood lumber is
harder than hardwood lumber.

9. Why it is important to select the wood to be used?

 Wood specifications is important to be familiar on what wood to be used

and to know what is the correct composition of the wood that will suit
your working operation. Not all wood will satisfy your need on what
you will work on.

10. What is a template?

 A guide usually made of plastic, metal or wood that will make your
measurements and working activity easier and it is used in workplaces
while paintung, cutting out, or shaping.
Conclusion

 In this laboratory experiment we were able to make a replica of a link

not exactly as given to us because of the different measurements and I
think we made a good job. By using the proper procedures and tools in
making the experiment we should be careful in process because one
mistake can change the figure or the result that will happen. As we
proceed and make experiments we became more familiar with the tools
and where and what process to use them precisely.
