Two of the Emerging Technologies that can be used to close Digital Divide are:
1. Expand Access at School
Schools with a high percentage of students without home Internet access need to be proactive in providing robust, ubiquitous access during the school day. Internet connectivity needs to be available where students work both before and after school. Offer wireless access in study halls, the cafeteria, and the library throughout the day. Some school districts serving large rural populations have added cellular wireless connectivity to school buses, creating "rolling study halls" for students as they ride to and from home or activities.
2. Inform Parents About Low-Cost Access
Some nonprofit organizations are working with telecommunication providers to make Internet connectivity affordable for families who qualify for free- and reduced-price school lunch programs. This organization, active in 49 states, has as its mission "to eliminate the digital divide by making high-speed, low-cost Internet service and computers and free digital literacy courses accessible to all unconnected Americans." Providing devices for students doesn't completely bridge the digital divide; educators also need to help students and families obtain home connectivity.
