are—physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and in terms of
any other aspects that make up who we are (Neill, 2005).
• A factual description of how you perceive your self
• “The individual’s belief about himself or herself, including the
person’s attributes and who and what the self is” (Baumeister,
1999)
CONGRUENT SELF

• According to Rogers, having a congruent self-concept means

having experienced acceptance by others for what they are,
just as they are
• People with congruent self-concepts do not feel they have to
fulfill particular requirements to achieve esteem from others
and they are able to acknowledge and express all their feelings
and needs.
• Congruent people feel free to include all experiences into
their self-concept which as a result become flexible and open
to change.
