General Guide to EJC Electrical System

How to Read the Electrical Schematic

! WARNING!

Only trained and authorized personnel should service the electrical system and electrical
components.

! WARNING!

Always refer to the electrical schematic specific to the machine being serviced to perform
troubleshooting or repairs.
The electrical schematic for this machine and a table of electrical symbols used on the electrical
schematic is included in the service manual.
The electrical schematic uses ladder logic. Power is always on the left side (L1) and ground is on
the right side (L2 = wire 3). Read the electrical schematic from left to right.
The electrical schematic shows how the components are connected electrically, but does not
necessarily show physical relationships. For instance, the contacts of a control relay may be
shown on one rung, and the coil of the relay may be shown on another rung.
The electrical schematic shows components in the de-energized state, including hydraulic
switches.
Remember that relay contacts actuate when the relay coil is energized. Beside each relay is a set
of numbers which indicate on which rung the contacts are located. A bar over the numbers
indicates a normally closed contact, otherwise the contact is normally open.

Wire Identification
All wires are colour coded. The colour code key is located on the last page of the electrical
schematic.
Wire numbers are identified with yellow tags which physically encircle each wire at connection
points on the machine.

Harness Drawings
Use harness drawings in conjunction with the electrical schematic to find a problem. Harness
drawings show connections to mechanical devices. Receptacles show connector pinouts. Terminal
block or instrument panel wiring prints show electrical device connections (i.e., relays, timers,
etc.) within the panel enclosure.

Protection
If a circuit breaker trips or if a fuse blows, it is usually the result of a short circuit. Determine the
cause before re-starting the machine.

! WARNING!

Fire Hazard. Do not bypass the breaker or fuse, or substitute it with a different type or size.

Connections
Many electrical problems are the result of loose or corroded electrical connections. A bad
connection causes a high resistance, which can result in excessive heat. Over time, a bad
connection can cause extensive damage. Whenever the access covers are removed, check all
electrical connections to make sure that they are tight and free of corrosion. Cleaning and greasing
connectors during regular maintenance sessions will help to ensure fail-safe operation.

Electrical Symbols
The following tables list electrical symbols commonly used on EJC electrical schematics. Most
symbols are internationally recognized. For a description of contact forms which may be
referenced, see “Contact Forms Reference Chart” in this document.
