The rotor should be loaded to capacity with any of the tubes described in the “Rotors and Accessories’ section of the Operators Manual. The tubes may be filed to their maximum volume with a fluid not exceeding a density of 4.10 gice (e.g., whole blood, or water). Ifthe centrifuge speedis) is found to be outside specified limits (as stated in section 1.3 of this manual), then the AC supply voltage and frequency should be checked with an appropriate power monitoring device. Deviations in line voltage and frequency will affect centrifuge operating speed, Ifthe source supply is found to be within tolerance, and the centrifuge is operating outside specified speed limits, please contact the nearest Becton Dickinson Primary Care Diagnostics dealer or contact Becton Dickinson Technical Assistance at 800-631-8064. Loading and Balancing For smooth and quite operation it is imperative to load the sample tubes in a balanced array. This means that tubes should always be loaded in pairs and in opposite wells as shown below. 5 801 1640 Serofuge 2002 Service Manual 44 Section 4.0: Theory of Operation | | Block Diagram and Circuit Description Refer to the Serofuge Block Diagram and Schematic for the following discussion on the theory of operation. i Printed Circuit Board Overview i The circuit board contains the necessary circuits to read a keypad and write data to an on board seven segment LCD display as well as perform timing operations, control an audible alarm, control a centrifuge lid latch and the speed of a shaded pole motor. The circuit board operates from either | a 115 VAC 60 Hz or 230 VAC 50 Hz supply and is selected via a voltage selector switch located on the PCB. The two speed Serofuge 2002, model 420352, controls the speed of the AC shaded pole motor by phase control of an on board triac (21). Motor RPM is obtained from a Hall effect switch located internally in the motor. The on board microcontroller, U2, processes the Hall effect pulses through a PID control algorithm to regulate motor speed to 2400 RPM #/- 50 RPM for the low speed setting. The motor runs open loop (no speed control) on high speed and on single speed models, 420351 and 420354, Motor ‘The motor for the Serofuge is a shaded pole motor. This is a type of single phase induction motor that has the advantage of not needing an external capacitor to generate starting torque. An internally mounted fan dissipates the heat in the motor. The motor has a Hall effect switch mounted internally to the motor sleeve that is used for speed feedback. A 115 VAC motor is used for the 115 , VAC Serofuge and a 230 VAC motor is used for the 230 VAC Serofuge. Motor Control ‘The Serofuge 2002 operates at two discrete speeds. The high speed is specified to be between 3100 RPM to 3550 RPM. The high speed of the motor is achieved by applying the full line voltage across the motor terminals. The low speed is specified to be between 2350 to 2450 RPM. Speed control in this range is achieved by phase control of the line voltage applied to the motor terminals. The motor speed feedback is achieved by a Hall effect switch integral to the motor. The Hall effect switch provides a single pulse for every motor revolution. The microcontroller on the PCB. measures the time between the leading edges of the Hall effect pulses. The microcontroller then implements a PID algorithm, which calculates @ phase control signal that is applied to the Triac to control the motor voltage. EMI and ESD Protection Three layers of protection have been utilized to guard against noise. Surge Suppressors have been placed across the supply voltage and the Hall effect output signal and Ferrite Beads have been placed in series with the supply voltage lead and power return lead of the Hall effect swi An RC filter (33 KHz cutoff) has been placed in series with the Hall effect output signal. In ad the Hall effect switch is decoupled with a .71uF ceramic capacitor. Power Supply The power supply is a linear power supply. The supply can sustain up to a 400 ma load and input voltages of either 103-130 VAC 60 Hz or 198-264 VAC 50 Hz operation. The transformer is a 10 VA transformer and has UL, CSA, TUV approval. The power supply incorporates noise protection the form of a filter capacitor (C21, C16), a transorb (D1) and a ferrite bead (FB1) on the output of the linear regulator (U9), ‘The output is 5 VDC +/+ 0.2V and 400 mA max. 6 8011640 Serofuge 2002 Service Manual Zero Crossing Detector The zero crossing detector circuit is used to interrupt the microprocessor when the line voltage crosses zero, This allows the microprocessor to start an on board timer that controls the firing phase angle of the motor Triac. The circuit consists of an H11AA1 AC optoisolator (U8) and a ‘comparator circuit (U7D). Reset Circuit The reset circuit consists of a power supply monitor IC (U1). The reset line is held low until the supply voltage reaches approximately 4.5 volts DC. Besides providing a standard reset for the microcontroller, U2, the reset signal also controls the line driver U3 to prevent inadvertent Triac firing or alarms during power transitions. ‘The audible alarm is used to indicate to the user that the end of a spin cycle has been reached. The alarm is a pizeo alarm with a buil in criver circuit. The pizeo alarm operates at a 4 KHz frequency and produces an 85 db tone. Motor Triac firing circuit This circuit was designed to supply power to either a 115 VAC shaded pole motor or a 230 VAC shaded pole motor. The Triac firing circuit is optically isolated from the DC supply by an MOC3022 optoisolator triac. driver (U6). This device was specifically designed for use as a triac gate trigger. The resistor in series with the optically isolated triac, R8, is to prevent excessive current flow during initial device tum on. The RC snubber network (R11-C13) around the motor triac serves as a snubber for both the motor triac as well as the optoisolated gale triac. This network is necessary to prevent DVIDT triggering due to the back-emf when the motor is turned off or if the instrument is initially powered-on at 90) degrees through an AC cycle. Lid Latch Solenoid Firing Circuit The lid latch solenoid is specified to operate from rectified line voltage in order to reduce the current requirements on the DC power supply. Consequently a different solenoid is required for the 115 VAC and the 230 VAC models. The solenoid firing circuit is designed for 98 VAC ~ 264 VAC operation. Operation of this circuit is identical to the motor triac. The lid latch firing circuit consists of R6, US, R7, R9, C14, Q2 LCD Display and Driver The LCD Display is a custom seven-segment display with icons indicating the status of the dynamic brake, the audible alarm, the speed (high / low) of the centrifuge and the status of the tachometer. The LCD is of the reflective type (no backlight) and has a fluid that gives a very wide viewing angle. The LCD also has a non-giate glass to increase visibility. The LCD Driver is @ Motorola MC145453 33-output LCD driver with an onboard backplane signal generator. Keypad Interface The keypad is read directly from port 1 of the microcontroller and port 0 pin 7. Port 1 is a bi- directional ports with internal pull up resistors port 0 requires the use of external pull-ups. The keypad is read by writing one bit on one of the ports low and scanning the remaining bits to determine if an additional bit is dragged low.
