An analysis of the Causes Behind Racial Tensions in France

Central Idea:

Development of the Topic:

One of the most important facts along this racial tensions, it began when the French
government established the law about the use and presence of religious symbols in schools,
subsequently of this banning the headscarves, skullcaps, and crosses from the learning
environment. It´s important to mention the belief of anticommunautarisme which has been
used in political discourse since many years ago, saying that exceptions should not be made
for minority groups, how this ideology gained popularity in the late 1990s the government
opted in 2003 that all immigrants to sign a contract for getting their residency card

Due to these events many immigrants have not yet been able to fully assimilate French
society , that´s why the creation of high-ethnic density areas in cities called banlieue in Paris,
where many people can´t even speak the French language what “which poses a challenge
to both cultural and economic integration”(Zivny,2016).Another reason for increased racial
tension is the French colonial mentality and racism in the citizens, example of this is that
Arabs were stereotyped as being racially inferior and fanatics of Islam and finally the recent
terrorist attacks like on Charlie Hebdo and in Paris contributed to the tensions
