THE GIVER

“Great power comes with great responsibilities.” That is what am I thinking after reading The
Giver. After listening Mr. Norcross ‘s word painting of these books, I choose this book because it
fits me best. I can easily finish reading this book and chill, so I pick this book up. However, I am
impressed when I read this book.
The giver is a dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. The novel follows a 12-year-old boy named
Jonas. Jonas lives in a plebian family with his parents and a sister. His live is like everyone else in
this book until his 12-year-old ceremony. In Jonas’s 12-year-old ceremony, Jonas is selected be
the receiver who has the greatest power in his society. Although Jonas plays the most
important role in his society, he is not happy because he gradually learns how dirty his world is
from the giver. For example: hunger, loneliness, pains, and wars. He decides to escape his world
and try to find something called love. To save Gabriel from release, he carries Gabriel when he
is escaping.
This book mentions several times Jonas can lie to other people. It asks us a question: can we
lie? In my opinion, I think it depends what is our purpose for lying. Maybe we can fib like my
mom’s cooking skill sucks, but my father always compliments my mom’s cooking. These kinds of
fibs, make other people happier and the result does not hurt another person’s feeling, are ok.
However, cheatings are not acceptable because these wicked lies will hurt other people.
Both Rosemary and Jonas choose to resign their job. Especially, Rosemary would rather
release than take the responsibilities. Even though they have the highest status in their society,
they cannot bear the pain of memorizations, so their end is miserable.
Our world is like what Jonas has seen-full of hunger, poverty, and wars, but we also have def
things such as: snow, colors, and most importantly-love. Nevertheless, we are living in a safe
society where poverty, diseases, and wars are far away. We should think further what we can
do to make people who cares us, or we care delighted. The magic word is love. Like what the
giver describes, we should spend more time with our families and friends. We don’t need to do
something remarkable, even just talk to them, our elders will be satisfied.
In conclusion, we should be responsible and love our families as much as we can.
