Level of study GIN First cycle, has only upper-secondary level entry requirements Entry requirements General entry requirements Aim The aim of the course is to develop the students" abilty to communicate effectively in English, both orally ‘and in writing, on business related topics. Content ‘Skils~ covering basic English grammar and sentence structure, and basle business English vocabulary. Business communication - covering standard letter formats, memos and summary/report writing, Presentational sklis~ covering in-class practice and seminars as well as individual and group presentations. Intended learning outcomes Knowledge and understanding (On completion of the course the stucients should, * Understand how the English language is used in written communicetion and in various business situations such as meetings and presentations (1). ‘Skils and abities (On completion of the course the students should, * be able to write standard business letters and memos and summaries in English on business related topics (2). * be able to prepare and deliver short individual and group presentations in Englisn on business related. topics ©), + be able to read, summarize and discuss books, newspaper articles and scientific articles on business related topics (4), + have a working knowledge of business words and phroses and basic English grammar (6). Judgement and approach (On completion of the course the students should, * be able to critically assess and improve their own texts and those of others (6), * be able to critically assess their own presentational skills and those of others (7). Implementation Lectures, seminars, workshops, gfoup assignments and individual assignments Examination - tests and forms Examination 1: individual written assignment (2 creciits): This assignment includes the writing of business letters (workshop), three summaries and one book report. Students will be graded on the Pass with honours, Pass oF Fall basis, with the possiblity to improve and re-submit the assignments on the two re-sit dates if the fall option is received (1, 2, 4, 5 & 6), Examination 2: Presentations assignment (2.6 credils): This assignment includes the preparation and delivery of two shor individual presentations and one group presentation as well as the participation in seminars and work-shops, Students will be graded on the Pass with honours, Pass or Fail basis, with the possibilty to improve and re-do the assignments within the time frame of the course or on one specific 16- st date if the fail option is received (1, 3, 4, § & 7), Examination 3: The individual written examination (3 credits): The individual written exomination is compulsory, and students are offered two subsequent re-examinations. Students wno do not pass or cannot attend the above mentioned occasions wil have the possibilty to re-do the examination on other ‘exam occasions for the course. Students will be graded on the Pass with honours, Pass or Fail basis (1. 2. 4.5 6) (On completion of the course students will receive Pass with honours, Pass oF Fail grades. In order to receive Poss the student must have achieved Pass on all three examinations. In order to achieve a Pass with honours on the course the sludent must, in addition, achieve a Pass with honours on the individual written ‘examination (3 credits) and on elther the presentations assignment (2.Scredits) or the individual written assignment @ credits), Course evaluation Course evaluation is performed in accordance with guiding principles issued by the University College. Transitional rules A studient admitted in accorciance with this syllabus is entitled to be assessed according to the terms set down in it one (1) year after it has ceased to apply, . ¢. when it has been replaced by a new syllabus or the course hos been discontinued. A student who has not passed the course within one year of the date when the syllabus ceased fo apply can, within another two years and subject to approval by the examiner, be offered further examination opportunities in accordance with a course syllabus deemed very similar to that of the discontinued course.
