History of Cali Cartel

 .This is based in Southern Columbia, around the city of Cali and Valle Del Cauca Department
 Founded by the Rodriguez Orejuela Brothers, Gilberto and Miguel, as well as associate Jose
Santacruz Londoño.The group's nickname is "Los Caballeros de Cali" ("Gentlemen of Cali" or
"Cali's Gentlemen"

1. Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela known as "The Chess Player“
 a person with good character and affable treatment, good personality and pocket full of
money which he use as a tool to build connection among sectors with power in the country
 responsible for the drug trafficking organization’s strategic long term planning
2. Miguel Rodríguez Orejuela known as "The Lord“
 ambitious, charismatic and well educated man
 he preferred to use bribes over violence to his emporium
 responsible for the drug trafficking organization’s strategic long term planning
3. José Santacruz Londoño known as "The Student"
 the architect of the idea of changing extortion, robbery
and kidnapping for drug trafficking, importing coca paste from Bolivia and Peru.
 The group originally started as members of the street gang " Las Chemas" which was led by Luis
Tamayo Garcia.
Las Chemas is a gang dedicated to drug trafficking, piracy and kidnapping
 Las Chemas were implicated in numerous kidnapping including that of two Swiss netizens, a
diplomat Herman Buff and a student, Werner Jose Staessle. They reportedly received $ 700,000
dollars in ransoms, which is believed to have gone on to fund their trafficking.
 At first Las Chemas is limited itself to counterfeiting and kidnapping, but gradually expanded into
the smuggling of cocaine base from Peru and Bolivia to Columbia for conversion into cocaine
hydrochloride
 In 1970's Cali Cartel became responsible for supplying most of the cocaine consumed in the
United States and Europe. Each year, the Cali Cartel smuggles hundreds of tons of cocaine into
the United States and Europe and launders billions of dollars in drug proceeds.
 In 2006, Cali Cocaine Cartel ended in Miami with all parties pleading guilty, landing them each a
30 year sentence in federal prison

 The assembled group first involved itself in trafficking marijuana. Due to the low profit rate and
larger amount required to traffic to cover resources, the fledging group decided to shift their
focus to the more lucrative drug cocaine
 In the 1980s, they branched out into cocaine trafficking. For a time, the Cali Cartel supplied 80%
of the United States and 90% of the European cocaine market.

Methods of selling and disposing drugs


 Concealment of drugs in legitimate containerized and bulk maritime cargo
 Secreted in the false bottoms and walls of containers, mixed perishable cargo (such as
seafood, frozen vegetables, and cut flowers)
 Hiding in the commercial products including:
a) concrete fence posts
b) ceramic tiles
