Ghost
A ghost is a spirit of a dead person that visits the living. Most people do not believe in
ghosts, but some do. Reports of seeing or hearing ghosts have been common throughout
history. Ghosts play an important role in some religions. Many American Indians and
peoples in Africa and the Pacific Islands believe in spirits that affect the living world.

There have been many stories, books, plays, and movies about ghosts. In most of these
reports and stories, the ghost looks like a person who died. Many ghosts look shadowy or
cannot be seen at all. Some ghosts are pictured as a white sheet shaped like a body.

In some stories, ghosts are friendly. In other stories, the ghosts try to harm or frighten
people.

Ghost Story
A ghost story is make-believe story about the ghost, or spirit of a dead person. In these
stories, ghosts usually haunt or visit places where they lived, where they were hurt or got
sick, or where they died. In some stories, the ghosts lives in a scary place like a dark, spooky
house or an empty broken-down castle.

Many ghosts are bad or scary, but in some stories, the ghost or ghosts try to help their living
friends or family.

Since ancient times, people have told stories about ghosts. However, the person who first
wrote modern ghost stories was Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. He wrote his first ghost story in
1838.
