THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIFESTYLE AND HYPERTENSION CASES IN

ELDERLY AT GAMPING 1 PRIMARY HEALTH CENTER WORKING AREA OF SLEMAN

ABSTRACT

Background: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease which becomes an important health


problem throughout the world. Hypertension increases the workload of the heart and arteries; if it
continues, it can cause damage to the heart and blood vessels since abnormal high blood pressure
can cause a risk of stroke, heart failure, heart attack, and kidney damage. Factors for chronic
diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke, cancer, diabetes mellitus and several other
chronic diseases are related to a person's lifestyle.
Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between lifestyle and the
cases of hypertension in the elderly at Gamping 1 Primary Health Center of Sleman Yogyakarta.
Research Methods: This study applied a correlation study with a Cross Sectional approach. The
sampling technique used purposive sampling. The samples in this study were 71 respondents of
elderly patients who experienced hypertension in Gamping 1 Primary Health Center of Sleman.
Retrieval of data employed lifestyle questionnaires with the cases of hypertension that has been
tested for validation and reliability. The data analysis technique applied Kendall Tau.
Results: The study found no relationship between lifestyle and the cases of hypertension in the
elderly at Gamping 1 Primary Health Center of Sleman with sig. (2-tailed) results of 0.614 (>
0.05).
Conclusion: There was no relationship between lifestyle and the cases of hypertension in the
elderly at Gamping 1 Primary Health Center of Sleman.
Suggestion: Elderly families are expected to always pay attention to the health of the elderly by
watching the elderly in order to avoid bad habits that can worsen the elderly situation.
