DIRECTOR’S NOTE

My trip to 1953 Florence, Italy was unexpected. I am grateful for the

invitation from the leadership of the Music Dance Theatre Program and
Department of Theatre and Media Arts to be the guest director of this
production of The Light in the Piazza. This year marks 30 years since I
ventured out from Brigham Young University with a graduate degree in
hand into a career in professional musical theatre. At that time I couldn’t
imagine that I would have this rare opportunity to return to this special
place where my passion for theatre blossomed. The true highlight of this
experience has been my collaboration with the students on stage and
behind the scenes.
I currently serve on the Board of Directors for BYU Alumni representing
the College of Fine Arts and Communications and a priority of the board
is to encourage alumni to return often and become available to students
as mentors. This experience has been extremely rewarding as I have
been able to be of service to the students, faculty and staff as we worked
together to tell this story. I love being involved at BYU and I hope that all
college alumni will discover opportunities to be “connected for good” and
give back to the students of this inspired place by sharing experience,
talents and testimony—to help in preparing the way for their success.

THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA  13

FIRST STOP: A JOURNEY THROUGH THE PIAZZA
Welcome to The Light in the Piazza Travel Guide. We are thrilled to have you here to take part in this
ordinary journey that becomes extraordinary. Over the course of the next couple of pages you will find
information that will come in handy as you begin your journey.

What exactly is a journey? Although different for everyone, a

journey includes moments ranging from exhilaration to terror;
“WE’RE ON VACATION!
and although challenging, it is often worth the struggles. A
journey can be a trial, a deadline, an entire lifetime or even IN FIRENZE!”
just a vacation! A journey teaches us about the world around
us, our place in that world, and our relationships with others.
For Margaret and Clara what will begin as an ordinary
vacation becomes an extraordinary journey that will forever change their relationship and love
for one another. It is a story that can share what it means to grow up and also what it means to
truly love someone. The most captivating part of The Light in the Piazza, for me, has been the
exploration, through the journey of the characters, to discover what defines love. The heart of
the story of Piazza is love and how the discovery of love and its many layers will affect each
of our relationships. Whether those relationships are between brother and sister, mother and
daughter, or true lovers, love exists in all forms. Although it may be found through ordinary
experiences, love can always become something extraordinary.
As we have journeyed through creating The Light in the Piazza, I have heard from our
Director, Scott Eckern, time and time again that we need to find the magic and the music in
every movement of the show. With its sweeping and awe-inspiring music, The Light in the
Piazza has caused me to step back and realize not only how essential it is to discover magic and
music in every moment of our lives but also how essential it is to discover love. Life passes by
so quickly and at times can seem dull and monotonous, unless we take the time to step back
and see that our lives are something of value. The love that we have for others can change
lives, and it can change ourselves. We have the opportunity to grow and become better as we
learn how to care for others. Although I cannot tell you what you personally will experience in
The Light in the Piazza, I can offer you a bit of advice that I have learned from working on the
show. If you are willing to open your minds and hearts to the love that is found in this story, you
too can join Margaret and Clara on a journey to discover what really is the light in the piazza!

Kristen Leinbach
Dramaturg

Adam Guettel is the grandson of Richard Rodgers,

of Rodgers and Hammerstein. Adam said, “I only
ever had one dream about my grandfather. I was
pursuing him across a lobby in New York as he was
about to get into an elevator. I wanted to ask him
if he thought I was any good. He looked at me and
said, ‘You have your own voice.’ Then the doors
closed and he was gone.”

SECOND STOP: PEOPLE TO KNOW
From the original author to the creators of the musical, the contributors to The Light in the Piazza
have each had a profound impact as well as take away from the story they were discovering.

Elizabeth Spencer AUTHOR

“I believe no one can read The Light in the Piazza without
seeing how remarkably Southern Margaret Johnson is.
She appears to be feminine and gracious, certainly well
mannered, a little vulnerable, a little innocent, a loyal wife
and devoted mother…It is worth considering Margaret
Johnson in many ways—isn’t she basically a very practical
woman? It is practicality versus love that comes into
conflict. Her heart goes to battle with her mind…Readers
and audience members will certainly have their own
opinions as to the rightness or wrongness of Margaret
Johnson’s decision. This mystery is the center of any real
story’s appeal and offers, to my mind, the only approach
to what life is about. It cannot be predicted or reasoned
through from any remote vantage point. It can only be lived,
experienced, felt. My story invites you to go along with her
and see.”
Craig Lucas PLAYWRIGHT
“Clara apprehends the world differently than
her mother. [Margaret] goes through Italy with a
guidebook. But the girl sees experiences, she sees
the light in the piazza. She literally experiences the
light as representative of her deepest feelings…That’s
why the score has moments where words no longer
suffice or are no longer important. It’s the feeling and
light. Those things carry us. Human beings are just a
conduit for love. I think Clara sees that. Love comes
before her and after her.

Adam Guettel MUSICAL COMPOSER & LYRICIST

“The world of Piazza is that real—but totally invented—
world that is summoned by true romantic love. That first
bloom of romantic love is a kind of overwhelmingly real
reality that’s unlike anything you get when you’re actually
living. And I’m trying to invoke, if not evoke, that with the
sound of the score. The other point I try to make with the
score is that the sound of having that and the sound of
losing that are the same. The feeling within one’s stomach
and heart of having it and the feeling—the actual physical
feeling of losing it—are the same. It’s just contextualized
differently.” “I wanted to write a love story, because I
hadn’t found love when I wrote it and needed a vessel to
pour all that energy into.”

LANGUAGE BARRIER? NO PROBLEM!

Did You Know...

A large portion of The Light in the Piazza is performed in Italian? However, unlike most shows
written in foreign languages The Light in the Piazza doesn’t provide subtitles. Why do you think
this is? Unlike tourist experiences today—where the English language exists as a universal
political language—in the 1950s, the English language as the “world language” was simply
a theory and not a reality. Speculation has it that by writing the musical partially in Italian,
Guettel and Lucas provide an opportunity for the audience to have a similar experience to Clara
and Margaret’s journey as they travel throughout Italy.

Here are a few commonly used Italian phrases that are found in
The Light in the Piazza.

Italian English
Firenze Florence FABRIZIO
La Luce The light TO CLARA

“L’essenza che mi mancava sei tu”
