Production of Propylene from Methanol

Background of the Study

The continuous increased in the production of methanol has led to the advancement of methanol-

to-propylene (MTP) industries. Propylene is greatly influential to the petrochemical industry and a

fundamental raw material for the production of organic materials such as acrylonitrile, propylene oxide,

polypropylene, and oxo-alcohols, along with an extensive variety of industrial products.

Propylene is commonly produced as a by-product of steam cracking of naphtha to produce ethylene, fluid

catalytic cracking to product gasoline, and of the fermentation process.

To increase the value of natural gas substantially, propylene is produced from methanol. Lurgi’s

methanol to propylene process is the most efficient solution which produces and delivers polymer-grade

propylene independent of feedstock.
