ABSTRACT

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is an enlarged prostate gland,

extending upward into the bladder and blocking the flow of urine by covering the
urethral orifice as a result of gradual dilatation of the ureter (hydroureter) and
kidney (hydronephrosis). Meanwhile, Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is an infectious
disease that can affect all age groups both children, adolescents, adults, and the
elderly. The incidence of UTI will increase, one of which is due to prostate
hyperplasia / obstruction which causes interference from the mechanism of urine
flow. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of Benign
Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) at Jemursari
Islamic Hospital Surabaya.
This study used an observational method with a cross sectional case study
design. The population of the data is BPH patients hospitalized in 2017 at
Jemursari Hospital. The sample is a BPH patient. Sample size using the Slovin
formula. Data collection is done by simple random sampling method with a sample
of 65 samples. The independent variable is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
with the dependent variable Urinary Tract Infection. Data analyzed using spss chi
square analysis.
In this study, most of the respondents found that 64.6% had Benign
Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) with severe LUTS and most of the respondents were
75.4% had Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). The results of statistical tests using Chi-
Square showed a significance value of Pearson Chi - Square of 0,000 (<0.05) which
means that Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The strength test of the relationship
of this study using Contingency Coefficient is 0.637 that there is a high correlation
between BPH and UTI.
The results of this study can be concluded that there is a significant
relationship between BPH and UTI and high relationship strength. Therefore to
help prevent the occurrence of UTI in BPH patients it is necessary to provide
immediate education and treatment in BPH patients to avoid complications of UTI.
