CLASSIC AUDIO HARDWARE

EMULATED BY NATIVE VST/RTAS
PLUGINS
Very welcome to our site. This must be what you are looking for. We
made a list of classic (“vintage”) outboard gear that are emulated
(modeled) by native VST or RTAS plugins. The list is also useful if you
wish to know the real names of specific models as developers
sometimes use quite vague names or pseudonyms.

As it is very unlikely that a vintage outboard effect is 100% modeled or

simulated by software plugins some indeed come pretty close to its “audio
hardware template”. On the other hand, others might reflect only a
concept, idea or are “-esque” to the original outboard. We believe that
some of these “conceptual plugins” are yet worth mentioning as they
still might be useful for “analog sound modeling”.

Though it seems to be fun to do “research” on this topic and to catalogue

software equivalents for analog audio-hardware, there are some
fundamental thoughts arising. For example, whether it is or will be ever
possible to fully model a 12AX tube or a hand-wound output transformer
(naming non-linearity, saturation and hysteresis). Other questions are:
will, for example, a software reproduction of a tube amp ever provide the
full-range harmonics and warmth its “hardware-twin” provides? And what
is the definition of warmth anyway? Is it really enough to add a little
saturation or harmonics to an existing sound to make it sound
"warmer" (or to boost 250Hz)? And is it appreciable that actually a large
quantity of modeled software is actually based on simply hearing the
original hardware piece while tuning the software until the desired sound
is achieved? Or by pumping signals into the gear-box and trying to make
a mathematical equation for what comes out? Please send us your
comments!

The sequence of the plugins in our archive is random and does not
reflect any “official ranking” (that in fact does not exist). We tried to
list them alphabetically in the first place but soon found out that some
“highlights” deserve a “better position”. Thus, the sequence is not fully
preference-free; however, we tried our best to include our own testing,
opinions from user reviews, forums, blogs and our own discussions with
developers.
We are constantly updating the list; however, to reach a 100% completion
we need your help. Please send us your comments and suggestions to
improve this important record. Though you can send us comments
directly, we hope receiving constructive critique. For example, please
avoid posting messages, that this or that plugin is “bad” or “sounds
terrible”. Tell us rather how you would describe the difference to its
original.

Lastly, note that we are not including any UAD or TDM plugins as we
wish to discuss native VSTs only (without the need of any additional DSP
power). Plus, our intention is to list software based on (more or less) pure
algorithms, excluding those based on impulse responses (e.g. Nebula or
Line 6 POD Farm) or sample-based plugins (e.g. Scarbee Mark I etc.).
Still, it is indeed difficult to evaluate which plugins are based on
painstainking analog modeling procedures and which ones are simply
"claimed" to be analog modeled while still be based on IRs.
THE LIST STARTS HERE. ENJOY
