In the Louvre, - monk of Opus Dei

n-med Sil-s -pprehends

J-cques S-unière, the museumʼs
cur-tor, -nd dem-nds to know
where the Holy Gr-il is. After
S-unière tells him, Sil-s shoots
him -nd le-ves him to die.
However, S-unière h-s lied to
Sil-s -bout the Gr-ilʼs loc-tion.
Re-lizing th-t he h-s only - few
minutes to live -nd th-t he must
p-ss on his import-nt secret,
S-unière p-ints - pent-cle on his
stom-ch with his own blood,
dr-ws - circle with his blood, -nd
dr-gs himself into the center of
the circle, re-cre-ting the position
of D- Vinciʼs Vitruvi-n M-n. He
-lso le-ves - code, - line of
numbers, -nd two lines of text on
the ground in invisible ink.
A police detective, Jerome Collet,
c-lls Robert L-ngdon, the storyʼs
prot-gonist -nd - professor of
symbology, -nd -sks him to come
to the Louvre to try to interpret
the scene. L-ngdon does not yet
re-lize th-t he himself is
suspected of the murder.
After murdering S-unière, Sil-s
c-lls the “Te-cher” -nd tells him
th-t, -ccording to S-unière, the
keystone is in the Church of
S-int-Sulpice in P-ris. The
Te-cher sends Sil-s there. Sil-s
follows S-unièreʼs clues to the
keystoneʼs loc-tion -nd discovers
th-t he h-s been tricked. In - fit
of r-ge, he kills Sister S-ndrine
Bieil, the churchʼs keeper -nd -
sentry for the Priory of Sion. At
the Louvre, L-ngdon meets
Jerome Collet -nd Bezu F-che,
the police c-pt-in, -nd re-lizes
th-t the two policemen suspect
him of the murder.
Sophie Neveu, -n -gent of the
dep-rtment of cryptology -nd
S-unièreʼs gr-ndd-ughter,
-rrives -t the crime scene -nd
tells L-ngdon th-t he must c-ll
the emb-ssy. When L-ngdon
c-lls the number Sophie g-ve
him, he re-ches her -nswering
service. The mess-ge w-rns
L-ngdon th-t he is in d-nger -nd
should meet Sophie in the
b-throom -t the Louvre.
In the b-throom, Sophie shows
L-ngdon th-t F-che is noting his
movements with - tr-cking
device. She throws the device out
the window onto - p-ssing truck,
tricking the police into thinking
th-t L-ngdon h-s esc-ped from
the Louvre.
Sophie -lso tells L-ngdon th-t
the l-st line in the secret
mess-ge, “P.S. Find Robert
L-ngdon,” w-s her gr-ndf-therʼs
w-y of -lerting her: P.S. -re the
initi-ls of her gr-ndf-therʼs
nickn-me for her, Princesse
Sophie. L-ngdon thinks th-t P.S.
might st-nd for Priory of Sion, -n
-ncient brotherhood devoted to
the preserv-tion of the p-g-n
goddess worship tr-dition, -nd to
the m-inten-nce of the secret
th-t S-unière died protecting.
L-ngdon decodes the second
-nd third lines in S-unièreʼs
mess-ge: “Leon-rdo D- Vinci!
The Mon- Lis-!” Sophie returns
to the p-intings to look for
-nother clue. The police h-ve
returned to the Louvre -s well,
-nd they -rrest L-ngdon. Sophie
finds - key behind the M-donn-
of the Rocks. By using the
p-inting -s - host-ge, she
m-n-ges to dis-rm the police
officer -nd get herself -nd
L-ngdon out of the building.
As Sophie -nd L-ngdon drive
tow-rd the Swiss b-nk identified
on the b-ck of the key, L-ngdon
expl-ins the history of the Priory
of Sion -nd their -rmed force, the
Knights Templ-r. He reve-ls th-t
the Priory protects secret
documents known -s the
S-ngre-l, or the Holy Gr-il.
L-ngdonʼs l-test m-nuscript is
-bout this very subject.
When Sophie -nd L-ngdon enter
the b-nk, -n unn-med security
gu-rd re-lizes th-t they -re
fugitives -nd c-lls the police, but
André Vernet, the b-nkʼs
m-n-ger -nd - friend of
S-unièreʼs, recognizes Sophie
-nd helps her -nd L-ngdon
esc-pe. Sophie -nd L-ngdon
figure out th-t the number left
ne-r S-unièreʼs body must be the
-ccount number th-t will open
the v-ult. When they open the
v-ult they find - cryptex, -
mess-ge delivery device
designed by D- Vinci -nd cr-fted
by S-unière. The cryptex c-n
only be opened with - p-ssword.
