I. Objectives:
At the end of a 90-minute class interaction, students should be able to:
A. explain the structure and function of animal tissue;
B. compare and contrast the difference between epithelial and muscle
tissue in terms of structure and function, location and number of tissues;
C. discuss the importance of epithelial and muscle tissues in our lives;
D. create a “gallery walk” to show understanding of epithelial and muscle
tissues.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Animal Tissue
Subtopic: Epithelial and Muscle Tissues

B. Reference: Priadi, Arif (2009). Biology 2 For Senior High School Year XI. Ciawi
- Bogor. pp 63-69.

C. Materials: White boards, board markers, karton papers, explorer kits,

projector/ TV, PowerPoint presentation, cut-outs, puzzles, videos, prepared
slides of animal tissues and light microscope.

D. Science Processes Involved: Observing, communicating, laboratory

acitivities and relationships

E. Science Concepts:
1. Epithelial Tissue – closely packed tissues that covers the surface of
the body or cavity of animal.

a. Lining Epithelium - composed of several layers which cover

the body surface, body cavity or tube. It fuctions for
protection and absorption

Based on location:
1. Epidermis
2. Endodermis
3. Endothelium
4. Mesothelium

Based on shape
1. Simple Squamous
2. Epithelium
3. Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
4. Simple Columnar Epithelium
5. Stratified Ciliated Columnar
6. Stratified Squamous Epithelium
7. Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
8. Stratified Columnar Epithelium
9. Transitional Epithelium
b. Glandular Epithelium - composed of specialized cells
secreting certain substances.

2. Muscle Tissue - composed of cells that have the ability to contract

in order to produce movement of the body parts. It contains
contractile proteins which is responsible for contraction called
myofibrils. Myofibrils contains actin and myosin. The cell is surrounded
by a layer called sarcolemma.

Three Types of Muscle Tissue

a. Smooth Muscle
b. Skeletal Muscle
c. Cardiac Muscle

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities:
1. Routine
a. Prayer
b. Greetings
c. Classroom Management
d. Checking Attendance

2. Motivation (Engage)
Group Activity 1: Animal Tissue Puzzle
Each group will be given five (5) minutes to form the puzzle
found in the explorer’s kit. Then, the leader of the group will
present their work and give an idea about the picture formed.

B. Presentation:
Using the puzzle, each group will give their definition and own
idea of what animal tissue is.

C. Development of the Lesson (Explore)

Guide Questions: (Explain)
1. What are the different types of animal tissues? Explain.
2. Group Activity: Quiz Bee
a. What are the main types of Epithelial Tissues?
b. What are types of Lining Epithelium based on location?
c. What are the types of Lining Epithelium based on shapes?
d. What are the main types of Muscle Tissues?
e. What are the characteristics of smooth muscle, skeletal
muscle and cardiac muscle tissue?
3. Values Integration
Since our bodies are made up of several tissues that work
together in order to support our daily activities, what do you call
the quality of combining parts so that they seem to belong
together?
Give several ways on how you can show unity in the
classroom.
D. Generalization:
Activity: Paper Slide
On a paper, each member of the group sketch and write what
they learned. Then they will line up in the video camera while quickly
summarizing what was learned.

E. Fixing Skills (Extend)

Activity: Snowstorm
Students write down what they learned on a ¼ sheet of paper
and wad it up. Given a signal, they throw their paper snowballs in the
air. Then each learner picks up a nearby response and reads it aloud.

IV. Evaluation:
Using a light microscope, each group will have to view a prepared slide
of epithelial tissues and muscle tissues. After which they have to write down
their observations and answer their activity sheets.

V. Assignment:
Make a “sci-doodle” showing the concepts and application of
epithelial and muscle tissues in short coupon bond. (20 pts)
Example of Sci-doodle:
EPITHELIAL AND MUSCLE TISSUE
Activity Sheet 1

Aim: Observing types of epithelial and muscle tissues.

Tools and materials: Light microscope, prepared slide of epithelial tissues like
intestine and muscle tissues

Procedures:

1. Observe all the prepared slides using a microscope with low magnification.

2. Make a sketch of outer layer of epithelial tissue (intestine) and color it. Give
necessary labels.
