RAFT Breakdown

Shogun: You are a Shogun and you have decided to write a formal document to the three lowest tiers of
Japanese society, they are the peasants, artisans and merchants. In this document, you will address the
importance of social classes and why they are of importance to society. You also should discuss the
boundaries which are imposed on these groups and that is essential for maintaining the hierarchy in Japan.

Daimyo: You are a Daimyo and possess a great amount of power during the Shogun area, you have
decided to begin a dialogue/conversation with the emperor about continuing your support for his rule. In
this conversation, you are trying to arrange a fair deal for land which the Emperor currently uses for his
children. In this recorded (written) conversation look to the economic and political structure of the Era to
support your argument during this dialogue.

Samurai: You are a Samurai who is currently fighting for current shogun ruler of Japan you have decided
that you are wanting to return home to your family. The only way in which you can do this is to write a
letter the Daimyo to ask if you are able to return home. This letter should include the following.

-The continuing stress of living conditions for the women in the family.

-The working conditions of the samurai.

-Explain the daily war routine of a solider.

-the importance of practising Buddhist religion and how the war impacts their practice.

-Warrior code.

Make sure you use correct terminology in your letter, social hierarchy was extremely important to the
Japanese people. The Daimyo is a figure who is your commander and therefore your tone of writing
should reflect respect towards your audience.

Peasant: you are a peasant who works as a farmer and you have decided to publicly present your case to
the current Shogun of Japan. In your presentation, you are to explain the working conditions for famers
and fisherman. In this presentation, include some recommendations to the Shogun about how the
conditions could improve with the support of the Shogun.

Artisan: You are an Artisan who is presenting a new range of weapons in which the Samurais and soldiers
can use for future battles. It may be up to you who you choose as your audience, although it is suggested
that you either choose the Shogun or Daimyo as they have the most control over the army. You should in
the following in your presentation.

-five different weapons used during the Shogunate Japan era

-two of these weapons of your choosing, provide an explanation of how they are made.
-what materials are used.

-What weapons are the most resourceful during a battle.

You should include labelled images and diagrams to support your presentation as well as a video which
can demonstrate how the weapons are used for battle. NOTE: Videos should not exceed over two
minutes.

Merchant: You are a merchant writing in a personal journal about your daily life. In this journal, you
record about the struggles of being at the lowest class in the social hierarchy of Japan and the issues that
causes for yourself and your family. Talk about the interactions between the variety in classes, how you
may view the higher tiers of the Daimyo and Shoguns. Include the role and responsibilities in which a
merchant has.

ALL RAFTS MUST INCLUDE 2 Primary and 2 Secondary RESOURCES which should be Harvard
referenced at the end of your assignment.
