Standard 1: Content and Foundational Knowledge Component 1.

c: Describe and apply

physiological and biomechanical concepts related to skillful movement, physical activity, and
fitness for teaching PreK-12 physical education.

Artifact: EXS 387- Lab 1 Date: Fall 2018

Reflection:

One of the first assignments I had in biomechanics was to analyze and identify human
movement using an anatomical analysis. This is when we recognize the action of our joints while
moving and identify if they are in flexion, extension, horizontal abduction/adduction,
hyperextension, or plantarflexion/dorsiflexion, as well as muscle contraction, concentric,
eccentric, or isometric, role of the muscle activated agonist, antagonist, or stabilizer, and finally
the muscle group that is activated, flexors or extensors.

Lab 1 correlates to component 1.c because the assignment is focused on understanding

how to identify human movement through a scientific lens. This assignment and content
knowledge could be related back to teaching PreK-12 physical education primarily through
physical activity and fitness. Applying the anatomical movement concepts on terms that that
students can understand within a fitness unit, or while performing different movement concepts
could help students have a better understanding on how to perform different movements safely as
well distinguishing the difference between various movements.

The importance of this standard and artifact are important towards my development as a
teacher because having competency in physiological and biomechanical concepts are vital for
contributing to the skill development of students. It will also help me as a coach allowing me to
analyze students’ movements and to be able to help improve their movements as well as possible
injury prevention and strength training.
