ABO blood groups are determined by the gene I having three alleles - I*, 1® and 1°. In human beings, there are present two antigens A and B produced by alleles 1* and I respectively. These antigens are present on the surface of RBCs. Also there are present two antibodies in the plasma - Anti A and anti 8. Accordingly, four types of blood groups are given in the following table. " Students will be able to i | Describe Scissor lft Analyse how scissor lift works Explain hydraulic system Understand the role of liquid in hydraulic system Design their own scissor lift Discuss applications of scissor lift 12 Introduction: Anhydraulic lft is a type of machine that uses a hydraulic apparatus to lift or move objects using the force created when pressure is exerted on liquid in a piston. Force then produces "lift" and "work." Hydraulic lift technology has a multitude of industrial applications, like construction and. transport. Itis often implemented to operate heavy machinery or to move and lift heavy and large objects like cars, dirt and shipping containers. Scissor lift Scissor lft uses hydraulic pressure as the motive force. In many cases, hydraulic lifts are powered by air compressors. These air compressors pressurize the hydraulic oil, allowing it to lift the associated load. If the air compressor has not had sufficient time to pressurize the hydraulic fluid, the lift will not function. Other hydraulic lifts use an electric motor driven pump or a fuel motor driven pump to pressurize the fluid. Hydraulic system Ina simple way we can say that the technology that uses the power of moving liquids is called hydraulics. ‘The basic idea behind any hydraulic system is very simple: Force that is applied at one point is. transmitted to another point using an incompressible fluid. Role of liquids in hydraulics Gases are easy to squash: everyone knows how easy itis to squeeze a balloon. Solids are just the opposite; but what about liquids? Liquids are virtually incompressible—much like solids but they can easily flow from one place to another very easily. The fact that liquids do not compress easily is incredibly useful. Have you ever fired a water Pistol? You have probably noticed that it takes some effort to press the trigger of a water pistol. ‘When you press the trigger, you are working quite hard to force the water out through a narrow nozzle: You are actually putting pressure on the water—and that is why it squirts out at a much higher speed than you move the trigger. 13 If water pistols can change force and speed, that means they work just like tools and machines. In fact, the science of water pistols powers some of the world’s biggest machines— cranes, tipper trucks, and diggers. Science behind scissor lift: Hydraulic scissor lft is based on hydraulics, the technology that uses the power of moving liquids. When we apply pressure on one syringe, then the water inside that syringe will move to another syringe which is connected with that, so the plunger of second syringe will move out with its force and lift the load as well. Popsicle sticks, which are in the form of scissors, open up on applying pressure in the syringe and load lifts up easily. Applications of scissor lift — Hydraulic lift technology can be found in hydraulic jacks, forklifts, car lifts, among many other machines. Machines can use it to provide the lift exertion (force) needed to produce work, such ‘as moving another object. Automotive, construction, avionics and shipping industries depend heavily upon it, and it has contributed to a large part of the modem world. Even automobile brakes use hydraulics. When you push the brake pedal, it pushes a small piston in the brake master cylinder. 4 Scissor Lift 1. Take two syringes of different volume and connect them with a connecting pipe and use scale as shown in the picture given below. “A. Draw water in the narrower syringe and push the plunger of the syringe inwards by 1 ‘om. By doing so, how much distance, the wider syringe move? B. Now push the plunger of the wider syringe inwards by 1 cm and find out the distance a moved by the plunger of narrower syringe. 2. Try lifting the objects mentioned in the table using the hydraulic scissor lift you made and write your observations in the table given below: Object Using air pressure Using Hydraulics Mobile Phone 250 ML bottle filled with water Plier Geometry Box Comic Book Fill syringes with the liquids mentioned in the table and try lifting up a small object kept on it. Write your observations and reason behind it. 19 Learning outcomes: | Students will be able to Define solar cell Explain solar panel Explain how does a solar panel work Analyze basic steps in solar energy generation Elaborate real life application of solar panel The sun's light (and all light) contains energy. Usually, when light hits an object the energy turns into heat, like the warmth you feel while sitting in the sun. But when light hits certain materials the eneray tums into an electrical current instead, which we can then harness for power. Solar Cell A solar cell is a device people can make that takes the energy of sunlight and converts it into electricity. Solar Panel Solar panels are devices that convert light into electricity. A solar panel is a collection of solar cells. Lots of small solar cells spread over a large area can work together to provide enough power to be useful. The more light hits a cell, the more electricity it produces, so spacecraft are usually designed with solar panels that can always be pointed at the Sun. How do Solar panels work? ee Basic Steps in Solar Energy Generation and Transmission 1. Sunlight hits the solar panels, and creates an electric field. The electricity generated flows to the edge of the panel, and into a conductive wire. .. The conductive wire brings the electricity to the inverter, where it is transformed from DC electricity to AC, which is used t6 power buildings. Another wire transports the AC electricity from the inverter to the electric panel on the property (also called a breaker box), which distributes the electricity throughout the building as needed. Any electricity not needed upon generation flows through the utility meter and into the utiffy electrical grid. As the electricity flows through the meter, it causes the meter to run backwards, crediting your property for excess generation. a1 Solar Panel with LED In the solar panel, LED is attached, so, on keeping it in sunlight, it generates current and LED will glow. Real Life Applications of Solar Panel Generation of electricity - All solar electricity generation requires is the installation of solar panels composed of specialized photovoltaic cells that can convert energy from the radiations of the sun into electricity. This electricity can then be used to power homes and offices, depending upon the requirement. 22 © —_Keeppanetin sunlight, LED will glow. e cis Gripes ees eee etter 4 sey asso oh Perform the activity in the supervision of an adult only. e Insert bigger LED in LED connector. 4 e Keep panel in sunlight, LED wil glow. ® ( © Join terminals of of 2 hole LED connector with solar panel using allen nuts & bolts.
