1. SCHEDULE TIME TO WRITE
Writing every day at the same time can really help you to stay focused and get in the habit of writing. Try to
think of when you’re at your best for writing – and make a point to schedule on your calendar at least 30
minutes or an hour for writing. Treat your time for writing the same you would an important meeting or
appointment.

2. PINPOINT WHY YOU H AVE W RITER’S BL OCK

Would you believe it’s not that you don’t have time to write?

You actually don’t want to write. So, rather than write, you procrastinate.

Trust me, if I don’t have time to write, it’s not because organizing my sock drawer is suddenly so much more
urgent. It’s just that really, I’d rather organize my sock drawers than sit at the computer and write out more
words than actually necessary.

This form of procrastination is actually a symptom of writer’s block.

I know it seems harsh, but don’t feel bad: I’m guilty of procrastinating as a writer myself.

Sometimes I have to write on topics I really don’t find all that exciting. But I know I need to write. So I write
anyways. It’s one of the secrets for how I more than write 2,500+ words a day.

When I’m stuck writing something I don’t really want to write, I like to instead have some fun with it. If you pay
enough attention to this blog, I’m sure you’ll notice some quirky stories in even the most b oring of topics,
like how to outline your novel.

Boredom is a great way to spice up your writing. Just ask the robot ducks in little red riding hood.

If you are stuck on what to write about, we have many Creative Writing Prompts to jumpstart your creativity!

3. ADJUST YOU R SL EEP ING SCHEDUL E

Writing in the morning when your mind is refreshed from a good night’s sleep can be more productive than
staying up late at night to write.

Try waking up an hour earlier to see if that helps you with finding a good time to write. F

or others, writing comes more naturally late at night. It’s different for everyone – so try experimenting with
what works best for you.

4. C ARRY A NOTEBOOK WITH YOU

You never know when inspiration may strike – and having a notebook is essential for being able to write at
anytime.

I keep a small composition notebook in my purse with pen. This way I can jot down notes, write anything at
anytime no matter where I am!

If you’re more technically inclined, you could also send yourself an email or keep notes in your phone. I am
forever writing notes.

5. ASK F OR HELP
No one can do everything all at once all on their own. It’s okay to ask for help!

Meet with a writing group to help you stay inspired and connected, and if you need to, ask for someone to watch
the kids or do household chores.

Don’t be afraid to follow your dream of writing and make connections with people who will help you get there!
