RESEARCH METHOD
This chapter presents the research method used in this study. It covers
research design, subject of the study, sources of data, research instrument, data
collection, and data analysis.
This study deals with the adjective clause errors analysis in students’ essay
writing. The research design is descriptive analytical research. Descriptive
analysis is a method in which the researcher collects the data needed, and
then analyze the data. After the data are gotten by counting the total of each
error classification to know the highest frequency of the student’s error, data
is interpreted with descriptive analysis.

The data sources of this study are obtained from the essays written by 30
students of English Language Teaching Program of State University of
Malang. The essays varied in length and quality.
The data for the study will be collected from students’ essay writing task.
First, the researcher gather the students who will be the subject for the
research. Second, the writer ask the students’ to collect their essay writing.
After collecting the data, the researcher analyze the students’ essay based on
Surface Strategy Taxonomy by Dulay et all to find the most common errors in
using adjective clause. The last, after got the result the data is interpreted.
The data are analyzed in three steps: identifying the errors, classifying the
errors, and tabulating the errors. The researcher then describe the findings and
reported them descriptively. The researcher read all written essay made by the
students thoroughly. Then the researcher classify the errors into some
categories using the research instrument as a guidance
