METHODOLOGY

3.1 INTRODUCTION
The research starts with a survey and data collection from a desired number of participants. Various
attributes of different mode of transport are considered for the survey. The attributes considered
are travel cost, speed of mode of transport, headway, comfort, punctuality and security. The
participants are allowed for the pairwise comparison of the attributes and rate them according to
their relative significance for them. Relative significance is supposed to vary across income and
age of the participants.
RESEARCH QUESTION

PROBLEM FORMULATION
Through this method passenger sharing rate for various means of transportation in the channel
after the opening of Mumbai- Ahmedabad high speed railway is calculated theoretically by using
Analytical Hierarchy process to find the relative importance of various attributes of railway
transportation. The passengers are divided on the basis of their income level and for partitions are
created to accommodate people of different level. One of the main criteria of this research is to
find how different income level would impact the sharing rate of various means of transportation.
The income level are divided into 4 distinct levels
1. Low Income Level ( Below Rs. 20,000)
2. Medium Income Level ( Rs. 20000- Rs 40000)
3. High Income Level ( Rs 40000- Rs 60000)
4. Very High Income Level ( Above Rs 60000)
Similarly age of a decision maker is taken into account and the age is also divided into four levels.
The age is taken into account because people of different age will have varying significance on
different attributes.
Similarly Age of the Participant is also divided into 4 distinct levels
1. Age 0-20
2. Age 20-40
3. Age 40-60
4. Age 60 Plus
Different Factors Considered
1. Cost of Travel : There are many ways to calculate the travel cost for various means of
transport. Generally accepted method would be product of fare rate and distance travelled
by that particular means of transport
𝐶𝑜𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑇𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙 (𝐶𝑖 ) = 𝑅𝑖 ∗ 𝐿𝑖
Where, 𝑅𝑖 is the fare rate of mode of transport i and L is the mileage for
the mode of transport i. The cost of travel could also be obtained from present data about the
mode of transport.
