It is a dipthong vowel sound, which is informally called “Long I” and a bit more
formally called “The long sound of the letter I”
/aɪ/ starts with the jaw open and the tongue more or less in the centre [ɑ] then it
glides to [i]

The English diphthong / aı / begins as /a/, a short lax non-labialized front retracted
open /a/ and immediately proceeds in the direction of the English /ı/. The lips are
neutral. The distance between the jaws is wider at the beginning of the articulation
and rather narrow at the end.
