Sarah Wilson; Adam Jones & James Ashford

Date Issued: 14th October 2019
Final Deadline: Friday 13th December 2019
Brief
BBC Three is the BBCs online destination for 16-34 year-olds, tackling subjects
that matter to them. We back original voices and unique ideas to provoke
reaction and stimulate emotion. Since 2016 we have more than doubled
reach and time spent, showcasing comedy, factual, drama and
entertainment content across iPlayer, the BBC Three website, YouTube and
our social channels. Since we moved online we have organised our content
around two editorial pillars – ‘make me laugh’ and ‘make me think’. We’ve
now expanded our remit to include a third pillar focusing on factual
entertainment and entertainment formats, which we hope will impart a new
tone/spirit to our content.

Guidelines
Vibe productions has been asked to commission a variety of productions for
BBC3 aimed at today’s youth and younger generation.
The topic and content of each production must appeal to both males and
females between the ages of 14 and 24.
The topics can vary from sport, social media, appearance, UK education
system, Brexit, mental health, fashion, history, politics or anything else you
think the youth of Great Britain want to know about.
Although many of the topics are serious, the content needs to appeal to a
younger audience so language and style must be appropriate.

All of the above comes with added elements and guidance, which can be
found on www.thcvibe.weebly
Your final deadline for submission is Friday 13th December, however each
production also has its own deadline.
Task 1

Factual Programme
The first production you will be putting together is a factual programme on an
issue of your choice. Your factual programme should be around 3 minutes
and you must organise an interview with an expert in the field you are
exploring. This will be produced as part of a team of 3 – 4.

Research
In your groups, you will be required to research:
• The topic – using both primary (focus groups) and secondary research
methods
• The interviewee
• Short documentary analysis
• Putting these results into infographic format

Planning
In your group you will need to plan:
• Locations for your interview
• What b-roll you will shoot
• How you will present it
• Questions for your interview
• Equipment List
• Crew List

Filming and Editing

You must film interviews using a minimum of 2 cameras. Individual edits to be
produced of your short documentary.

Deadline for final edit: Friday 8th November, 4pm

Task 2

Animation
Your second production is a 30 second stop motion
animation. This will provide you with a different
challenge to approach your topic. You are required
to take between 16 and 24 photos per second of
footage (480 – 720 images overall) for your animation.
This format also lets you be extremely creative in how
you approach it! How can you represent it within this
timeframe? You will complete this task individually.

Research
You will be required to research:
• What is stop motion animation?
• Secondary research into 3 different materials you could use
• Primary research practicing with your chosen method

Planning
You will be required to plan:
• Location/set for your production
• Movements of your materials
• Storyboard
• Script
• Sound list

Shoot and edit

Take the photos, record your sounds and edit the piece together.

Deadline for final edit: Friday 22nd November, 4pm

Task 3

Short Film
Your final production for these units is a short film that approaches your
subject in a narrative form. How can you reflect your topic through a story?
You are required to produce a film 3 – 4 minutes in length. You will produce
your own production for this task.

Research
You will be required to research:
• What your audience want to see (primary research – survey)
• Short film example analysis of your genre

Planning
You will be required to plan:
• Script
• Storyboard
• Location recces
• Props list
• Crew list
• Contingency plan

Filming and editing

Whilst you are producing your own short film, you will still need to work with
people. You will get this week to film and edit your production – this is a test
of organisation skills too!

Deadline for final edit: Friday 6th December, 4pm

Task 4

Pitch
Now you’ve produced 3 different productions on your chosen topic about
British Youth, you need to pitch 1 of them to us. Pitching is an important skill
needed in this industry and it will help with confidence building. You are
pitching your chosen product as though we are investors who will fund you to
produce a full-length version.

Pitch
You will be required to produce visuals to accompany your presentation that
cover:
• Your topic and why it’s important
• How your production reflects your topic
• Why you believe your idea would be successful
• Any other questions

Pitches will take place: Thursday 12th December, 4pm

Task 5

Evaluation
You are now required to evaluate the overall success of your research and
production processes.
• What went well in your productions?
• What could you have improved?
• Did they turn out as planned?
• What skills have you improved during this process?
• Your pitch
