DOWRY

INTRODUCTION:

The first all-India legislative institution identifying with dowry to be put on the
resolution book was The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 and this enactment came into
power from 1 July 1961. It denoted the start of another lawful structure of dowry
provocation laws successfully restricting the requesting, giving and taking of dowry. In
spite of the fact that giving dowry is unlawful, it is as yet normal in numerous pieces of
India for a spouse to look for a dowry from the wife's family and at times, this outcomes
in a structure of extortion and viciousness against the wife.

To further fortify the counter dowry law and to stop offenses of mercilessness by the
spouse or his relatives against the wife, new arrangements were added to the Indian
criminal law – section 498A to Indian Penal Code and section 198A to the criminal
system code in 1983. In 2005, the protection of ladies forom domestic laws was passed,
which included an extra layer of assurance from dowry provocation. Despite the fact
that the adjustments in Indian criminal law mirror a genuine exertion by officials to put
a conclusion to dowry-related violations, and in spite of the fact that they have been in
actuality for a long time now, they have been to a great extent scrutinized as being
inadequate.
