 History of The Granny Smith
 The Granny Smith green apple is a
tip-bearding apple cultivar. It origi-
nated in Australia in 1868 from
seeding by Maria Ann Smith.
 Granny Smith are used for apple
pies because of its bitterness.
 By the 1960s Granny Smith apple
were practically the logo for The
Beatles apple recording studio.
Description
Granny Smith apples are light in color.
They are crispy, juicy, tart apples which
are excellent for-eating raw and cooking.
Granny Smith apples are ideally suited
for pie baking. They are flavored for sal-
ads because the slices don’t brown as
fast as other varieties. They also tend to
have a hared texture than other green
apples.
Personal Impressions
The Granny Smith apples are great for apple
pies for its bitterness and tartness. In The
Granny Smith season the apples are more
crispy and juicy. The season for the Granny
Smith is in September though November.
The Granny Smith is a hard, crunchy,
green-skinned apple with a tart taste. A
hybrid of the Green Pippin originally
grown in England, it has a high juice con-
tent and keeps very well. Granny Smiths
originated in Australia and are imported
mostly from Australia and New Zealand,
although we
get a few
from South
Africa .
