Abstract

The experiment was conducted to introduce the production of waxes and to make the

students knowledgeable about the functions and process involved in making candles. It was also

done to impart the concepts and increase laboratory skills of the students. The experiment was

short and can be done for half an hour only. Methods used in making candles are melting and

pouring. The paraffin wax was melted was melted and was remold in another container to make a

decorative candle. Other type of wax can also be used depending on its availability. There was no

separating agent used except for soaking it in water. The experiment was successfully done and

decorated candles was produced by the students inside the laboratory.

Introduction

A candle is an ignitable wick embedded in wax or another flammable solid substance such

as tallow that provides light, and in some cases, a fragrance. It can also be used to provide heat, or

used as a method of keeping time. Wax is the heart of the candle. One of it is the Paraffin. The

traditional wax used in candle-making for hundreds of years, and is still the most popular

ingredient for candles on the shelves today. It’s cheap, and you can easily add colors and scents.

The primary concern with paraffin is its potentially toxic nature. Paraffin is a petroleum by product,

which automatically gives it a bad name for some folks. If all-natural products are your thing, it’s

probably best to seek an alternative wax.
