SHORT NOTES:

JUVENILE CRIMES IN INDIA

INTRODUCTION

In the age of global connectivity and technological developments, Juvenile Crimes continue to
be a harsh reality in India. What would change with new laws or are the present laws amending
the situation? Is the lack of awareness to be blamed or is it the fact that the people continue to
turn a blind eye to such situations that such crimes, petty or heinous continue to breathe and
exist in our society?

Juvenile Crimes in general and heinous crimes in particular are being committed regularly in
particular are being committed regularly India by children. Crimes such as theft, burglary,
snatching which are not so serious in nature or crimes such as robbery, dacoit, murder and rape
etc. which are relatively serious are on the rise in whole of the country. the unfortunate thing
is that all types of these crimes are also being committed by children below the age of 18.

What is to be understood is the vision of the word ‘Juvenile’ and how does this Juvenile enter
the world of Crime and Delinquency. It can be seen that-

“despite the constitution’s vision of a healthy and happy child- protected against abuse and
exploitation, and a National policy for children- the majority of children in India continue to
live without a childhood.”1
