The Situation

We enroll to Pro Ed program for us to become a teacher. We had six subject and

every subject is equivalent to three units, in total we had 18 units to finish for us to be able

to take the LET exam in March 2020. In our first meeting with our instructors, they give

us orientation and what we should expect after we finish their subject. We also introduced

ourselves and what we current doing. Most of us are currently working in different

business establishment and some are already teaching in different school here in

Cagayan de Oro City. We have four instructors who has different teaching technique.

Our instructor in Educ 22 - Child and Adolescent Development and Educ 27 -

Principles of Teaching – 1. She use teaching method called andragogy, the method and

practice of teaching adult learners; adult education (Google Dictionary). Every meeting

she prepared her slide deck and discuss the lesson in simplest way. She gives quizzes

in the following meeting for her to check if we are learning and still know the topic in our

last meeting. She also give us assignment that are related to the subject that she is

teaching. Example of the assignment that she is giving to us is research in advance about

Gilligan, Pavlov, Thorndlike and Skinner. The people that she will let us research are the

people who has great theory in child and adolescent development.

Our other instructor in Educ 32 – The Teaching Professor and Educ 26 –

Curriculum Development. In our first meeting, she give us orientation, she tells us a short

story about her life and assigned each of us topics that we need to report in her both

class. At first we though that she will discuss some important topics that we need to learn

like our instructor in Educ 22 and Educ 27, but she only let us present our report and

sometimes she is not present during the reporting of my classmate. We also had two to
three days that she is absent because she said that she need to attend meetings,

seminars and work for her papers because she is going to other country to teach there.

And when she will have a class on the following week, she will ask us to start our class

early during lunch hour. She will just ask us to bring our lunch, this means that we will not

have break because we need to catch up for the days that we don’t have class on her.

We are the one who need to adjust for us to finish all of our reports. And also when she

is absent, she will post in elearn an assignment, activity and requirements that we need

to pass in following days. When she is present in our class and some of my classmate

present their report, she will only listen to the report and assume that all of us learn from

the reporters.
The Problem

The problem that we had in our instructor in Educ 32 and Educ 26 are her teaching

method, being absent for more than three times and how she gives heavy assignment,

most of all are not relevant.

She used instructional strategy called student presentation. Student presentation

can help student to learn how they can prepare materials for public presentation, and help

them improves their speaking skills. But there are disadvantage with this instruction

strategy. Some of the cons of student presentations are oral presentation lack studies on

best practices for assessment (Parker et al. 1996, Caroll 2006) and student are often

placed in presentations with little or no guidance (Bacon, Steward, & Silver, 1999; Bolton,

1999, Etington and Camp, 2002; Rotfeild 1998).

She never discuss or add important words that we need to know especially the

code of ethics, PPST and how to make Curriculum Guide. She only let us present our

report and assume that we can easily learn the topic because we are all adult. She even

let us take an exam about PPST that she did not even discuss. We just do self-study and

research about it by our own to pass the exam.

She already had more than three absences and every time she is absent she will

give us heavy assignment and when she will be present in the next meeting, she will ask

us to start our class in lunch break and take our lunch in just for 10 minutes. We are the

one who will adjust and suffer at the end.

She gives heavy assignment with many questions and needs critical thinking to

answer each question. She thinks that all of us can finish it by an hour, so she only gives

us 2 to 3 days to finish and submit it in Elearn. She knows for the very start that majority
of her class are working during weekdays and only Sunday is their vacant day to do their

assignments. Many of our classmate are late in passing their assignment because they

can’t finish it on time.

Analysis

Teaching Method

We think that our instructor’s instructional strategy can truly help us if she does her

part as our teacher by giving her feedback on our report and correct it if there is wrong

and add addition information. We think also that she lacks giving quality of education

because she only relies on our report.

What she should’ve done was after our presentations there is a follow up questions

or the deepening the lesson. She could have also given us an assessment so she can

evaluate whether if we have learned or not.

According to Code of Ethics Article IV: A Teacher and the Profession under section

2. Every teacher shall uphold the highest possible standard of quality education, shall

make the best preparations for the career of teaching, and shall be at his best at all times

and in the practice of his profession.

Absences

Her excuses to us were she was on the meeting; she is in the seminar and

sometimes she is not feeling well. These excuses were okay to us because she is

informing us ahead of time, but it is so much, and it affects our learning in that course. In

her thinking it is okay that she will be absent, and we will just continue to do our reports

and she will give seat works in elearn without deepening the lesson.

Absences are okay with valid reasons and that won’t interfere the classes or the

lessons that is needed to be taught in that day so that we will not be in hurry to get that

lesson done and we will not adjust in the following meetings.

According to ADMU Code of Conduct Outside Employment/ Outside under 3.3.4.2

Time devoted to outside employment must not interfere with normal University work hours

and duties;

Heavy and Irrelevant Assignments

The main purpose of assignments is to increase the learning capabilities of

students. The more we use our brains, the more they develop. This is a proven scientific

fact, and this is the principle behind giving extremely creative and involving assignments

to the students. Students learn a lot more when they read or practice something by

themselves - Importance of assignments at the school and college level (August 6, 2014).

at-the-school-and-college-level

It was nice that she has given us assignments so that we could learn but instead

of giving us assignments that are in line in with our lesson, she would give irrelevant

assignments. We also will just cram for that deadline without learning, we are answering

the assignments just for passing it not really for the learning.

According to Code of Ethics Article VIII: The Teacher and Learners under Section

2. A teacher shall recognize that the interest and welfare of learners are of first and

foremost concern and shall deal justifiably and impartially with each of them.
Alternative Solutions

Alternative Solutions Advantages Disadvantages

Talk to the teacher She may be aware of the She may not take it seriously

problems and take and go on with how she do her

action with it. teaching.

Talk to the Dean She will call the attention She can be suspended or

of the teacher and the terminated.

Dean can give her

ultimatum for her doings.

Recommendations

First was talking to her about the problems, opening to the teacher about how she

teach is very scary, especially if that teacher belongs to the Distinguished Teachers

because in this level she not merely teaching others but also influencing or inspiring other

teachers. These teachers are recognized as leaders in education, contributors to the

profession and initiators of collaborations and partnership. So we taught that after our

presentation she will give additional information that we did not mention about that lesson.

But it was not what we expected and turns out worst. We should take an action to it so

that we can prevent the problem to get worst. Talking to her was one of the best solution

in this problem, she could have known that we are suffering with her teaching and also

she can take action to that, she can give alternatives with our assignments and she can

deepen our learning after our reports.

Talking to the dean is the last option. The disadvantages of talking to her was

maybe she will not take an action and won’t take it seriously. So, our last option is talk to

the Dean so that she can call the attention of that teacher and can address to her our

problems. The Dean has the more power to take an action with the problem she can give

an appropriate action like giving warning or ultimatum to that teacher. She can also

observe the teacher in the class so she can see if the lesson that are presented to the

her was being follow by the teacher.
