Sudha Murty is a storyteller par excellence as per me. She has an absolutely
amazing way of connecting to the readers which makes her books so
wonderful to read. ‘The Magic of the Lost Temple’ published
by Puffin Books is the story of twelve year old Nooni who has grown in
Bangalore but needs to go to her grandparents village for six weeks.

Nooni is a tomboy who loves to explore new things and is super

adventurous. Her mother has training in Delhi for six weeks while her
father is a doctor and can’t take care of her since he has erratic timings.
Nooni lands in her grandparents village wondering what she will do for six
weeks.

However, she ends up making a lot of friends, learns to cycle, helps out with
a wedding, learns about papad discovering that raw papad flour tastes so
much better than dried papad. Nooni discovers the joys of village life and
connects with nature. She learns a lot about various plants and ways of the
forest. When she hears the story of an ancient lost temple at her
grandparents village of Somanahalli, she is super fascinated by it. But can
she discover the lost temple? How do the villagers help? Why does her dad
change his views about the village? Why does she extend her stay at the
village?

The best part of reading Sudha Murty‘s books are her simple English and
the way she connects to the readers with her everyday stories. A subtle
reference to today’s fast life in cities and the utter lack of respect for nature
is woven wonderfully in the book. Small incidents to teach us the
importance of sharing and friendship as well as weaving in the simplistic
life in a village make the book a delightful read. Nooni’s character is well
etched out and each of her adventure makes us love her more.
