INTRODUCTION

Music, parental involvement, sports – all of these have an influence on how children

perform academically. The way children choose to spend their free time can affect their school

performance. Students who participate in extra-curricular activities are three times more likely to

have a grade point than students who do not participate in extra-curricular activities. “Analyses

revealed that regardless of Student’s background and prior achievement, various parenting,

volunteering, and home learning positively influenced student grades. Numerous studies have

examined the factors influencing student’s academic achievement, and many activities were

found to have a significant influence. (Fujita, 2005)

Public school students in Lala National High School participate in a wide variety of

extra-curricular activities: Athletic program, service, school government clubs, music, art and

drama organizations. These are usually conducted outside the normal school days. The activities

are voluntary.

Do these clubs, teams, and organizations support the academic mission of our schools? In

a paper looking at predictors of academic giftedness, it wasfound that gifted students appear to

spend their time out of school participating in constructive activities. (Holloway, 2000)

Can extra-curricular activities help students in the future? Involvement in extra-curricular

activities also helps at-risk students. It will also indicate that engagement in school extra-

curricular activities is linked to decreasing rates of early school dropouts in both boys and girls.

It was discovered that such participation provides marginal students an opportunity to create a

positive and voluntary connection to their school. They strongly believe that involvement in
extra-curricular activities may support the at-risk student by maintaining, enhancing, and

strengthening the student-school connection. (Holloway, 2000)

Most students in Lala National High School concentrate their participating in extra-

curricular activities. One of the students in Lala National High School who graduated last year

received a scholarship, free boarding house, and allowance in a school in Manila. He enrolled at
