Request to Change Program of Study

Personal Statement

At the beginning of the year, I anticipated being a double major in music education and

saxophone performance. However, I knew that I wanted to attend graduate school to pursue

degrees in orchestral conducting since this is what I would ultimately like to do. As this year

progressed, I slowly realized that I would not have time in my schedule to pursue an independent

study in conducting, take lessons on piano, or work as a collaborative pianist with vocalists and

other instrumentalists. I believe all of the aforementioned experiences would benefit me in a

future career in orchestral conducting. If I were to major in music education, I fear that I would

not be able to delve into these areas a deeply as I would like to. For this reason, I would like to

change from a music education major to a performance major. The less intensive course load

would allow me to work more on piano and further develop my conducting skills so that I am

better prepared for my future career.
